Psychology in Everyday Life: Studying- How to Effectively Learn and Remember

Learning well needs someone to learn since one cannot learn well when tired, under stress, or abusing alcohol or drugs. Trying to keep a constant sleeping and eating routine is also very important by eating moderately and nutritiously and avoiding drugs that can impair memory, such as alcohol. Ideal memory supplements such as sugared soda, which releases glucose, can improve memory slightly.

Learning should be a continuously active process, and to acquire information more effectively, one should actively manipulate the information. Undertaking a learning rehearsal is very important since information is acquired most effectively when one is actively thinking about or elaborating on its meaning and relating the material to something different. Visualizing how the material relates to one’s interests and goals can help to learn.

The spacing effect is a fundamental principle of learning. A learner can be easier to remember or learn a certain material by studying the material in some shorter learning periods over a longer period of time than studying it only once for a long period of time. A learner should set realistic goals for the time they are going to spend studying and what they will learn while trying to stick to such goals. The learner should do a small amount of learning every day, and by the end of the week, they will have accomplished a lot.

By comparing my current learning and studying process with the strategies given, I have realized that I normally use the concept that learning is a task that needs a prepared person to study by avoiding learning when tired, under stress, and not abusing drugs. However, I have realized that I do not apply the concept of learning as a continuously active process since I usually read when exams are around the corner, so I am currently not effectively studying and learning.

Ultimately, the changes that I can make to my studying and learning process to be more effective is making it a continuous process. I will also consider using the spacing effect concept to improve my memory further.
