A Facet of America
Locate an image online that addresses a facet of America; this could be an event, artwork, photograph, person, issue, controversy, history, etc. The choice in image is open. Note the material in The Little Roadrunner (119-62); you are not expected to memorize the citation rules but note where to access this information. Page 162 gives an example of an image integrated into an essay. A proper caption reads as a complete sentence and looks like an in-text citation which then connects to the full-source citation given on the works cited page. Whatever occurs first in the full citation (author or title) is how you determine the parenthetical reference for the source. I recommend using citation generators but be sure to double check for the correct MLA format. Note the image is an appropriate size (generally not taking up more than a third of the page) and does not compromise the margins. The caption beneath reads as a complete sentence and gives the source as an in-text citation; if you turn to 168-9, there is a sample Works Cited, and you can see how the full-source citations connect to the in-text citation given in the caption which reads as a complete sentence. In essence, MLA header, page numbers, title, image, caption with in-text citation, paragraph addressing image, then full-source citation (use a hanging indent if necessary). Construct a paragraph addressing the content of the image and use your own observations to explore the image for your readers (do not “borrow” written material from where you found the image or provide facts you must cite; rely on your own observations and ideas for what the image present and represents). Use formal tone and active voice in your writing. Review The Little Roadrunner section W-4 addressing paragraphs. Some overall tips for constructing a paragraph: A complete paragraph contains no less than five complete sentences; all paragraphs begin and end with topic and summary sentences, and there should not be quotation or in-text citations in the first and last sentence of a paragraph). Submission is to be in MLA format (header, original title, page numbers, margins, double spacing, etc.).
