Abortion involves terminating the life of a fetus before it can survive on its own outside the uterus. Abortion is usually carried out during the first trimester, mostly before the ninth week of pregnancy. Safe and medical abortions should be legalized and not criminalized. This paper will discuss why women and young ladies should be allowed to access safe and medical abortions.

Under the 1861 Abortion Offence Against the Person Act, abortion is a crime. The act states that abortion was only allowed if two or more doctors stated that continuation with the pregnancy would endanger the life of the mother. The campaigners wanted the abortion to get decriminalized in Wales and England (Dyer 2017). The article says that a coalition of twenty organizations, We Trust Women, wanted that women who sought for abortion should not risk a life jail term under the law in the Victorian era where only men had the right to vote.

Still, since abortion takes place in the initial stages of the fetus before it gets feelings and consciousness, it is not morally wrong to have the abortion )Nobis 2019). The article says that the right to live does not entail the right to life in somebody’s body; the mother has the right to terminate the life of the fetus in her body, unless there is a technology that allows the fetus develops outside the womb. Therefore, it is wrong to criminalize actions that are not wrong.

The article states that abortion is normal, and global research shows that thirty-five women aged between fifteen and forty-four years out of a thousand have an abortion. The laws on abortion vary in different sectors globally. In most cases, the restrictive laws do not hinder women from aborting since they always sought it from unsafe and unprofessional methods. The article says that abortion should be part of public health, and any law should promote its accessibility (ESHRE 2017). Risk reduction strategies should be put in place to ensure that death rates and morbidity rates as a result of abortion get reduced. Abortion can get done surgically or medically; both are effective and safe, and every woman who has had an abortion should learn on the importance of having a contraceptive to avoid unnecessary pregnancies.

It’s been fifty years since when the world health organization recognized abortion as an issue in public health. Addressing unsafe and abortion remains a national and global issue that needs to be aggressed. It possible to prevent the disability and the deaths that occur due to unsafe abortion, through the provision of sex education, contraceptives, giving legal and safe induced abortion, and post-abortion counseling and care should be given (Fathalla 2020). Restriction determined by lawmakers continues to encourage unsafe abortions; therefore, it is the duty of health providers to educate the lawmaker on the reduction of the limits, to promote safe and medical abortions.
