Advancement Of Democracy
The year 1990 witnessed changes in the economic and political reforms in the recent independent states (Contributors, 2016). The collapse of the Soviet Union cleared away dictatorial and authoritarian regimes and replaced them with governments which were determined to pass pro-democratic copious reforms. Democracy has proved to be the only successful possible regime outcome in the post-cold war wave. Authoritarian regimes are still in existence, although less common as compared to when the Soviet Union had not collapsed (Diamond 2002). This paper seeks to expound on the progression of democracy which came due to the collapse of Soviet Union.
During the close of cold war in South Africa, the benefits as a result of politics were certain and critical. .The long anti -apartheid struggle gained momentum worldwide resulting to local resistance; it was time to take into consideration basic demands like governmental rights and fairness hence negotiated consent process which aims to end the harsh apartheid rule started in 1991.
Pan- Africanism emerged during second decade when Soviet Union had collapsed. The continent was still defenseless to meddling from foreign countries, and as a result, several African leaders transformed Organization of African Unions to an operative organization responsible for solving and preventing occurrence of conflicts. The charter which focused on democracy, leadership and elections ensured equality by holding of periodical elections to choose the leaders they want while being monitored by African Union.
IT was affirmed that nations cannot be built without full participation and popular support by the people nor can economic crisis be solved without creativity and popular majority of the people. It is the people who will reap the benefits of development and therefore, they have to properly alter the he pattern, structure and political context of the process of the socio-economic development.
The collapse of the Soviet Union left many leaders with a lot of exposure and they scrambled to establish new set of relationships between them and other different countries. It was observed that now the African states had to either trust themselves or give in to pressures from the outside for democratic improvements. The number of dictatorial rulers declined thus making Africa to become more stable and military interventions declined. This was due to the formation of organization of African Unity (OAU). In conclusion, it is noted that the success of democracy largely depended on the level of cohesion between the nationalists and fair representation between parties who contested for leadership seats. Only by a united front could they stand a chance of defeating their enemy.
After the of close of cold war and the Soviet Union’s fall, the financial institutions and western countries started to insist that in order for the African states to receive financial assistance, they had to reform their political systems or otherwise, the finances would be withheld. Due to their deteriorating economies, many African countries gave in to democracy.
