An advertisement from the years 1990-2004
During the course of this project, you will find an advertisement from the the years 1990-2004, and perform a rhetorical analysis on the image. Prompt For this assignment, you must find a printed advertisement from1990-2004. The library has access to several databases with periodicals, but not all of these include advertisements; the easiest of these is probably to access the ProQuest Database’s collection of New York Times issues (look for the one listed as “New York Times (1923 – Current file)” as this has the advertising images included, as “Display Ads”), as this database includes images of advertisements. However, you are free to look through other newspaper archives or magazines. Make sure that you know the origin of any advertisement you plan to use, so that you can properly discuss and cite it. Produce a rhetorical analysis of your chosen visual artifact. In your essay, you should accomplish both of these goals: Describe the artifact, its intended audience and purpose, and how the image attempts to accomplish that purpose. In other words, how does the image appeal to its target audience? How does it sell them on the product or service it advertises? Advertisements are products of their era and society. In order to be effective, they must both cater to and promote cultural ideas. What does this image tell you about the culture of that period? Does it seem different from modern advertising? This project involves research as well as analysis. You may need to do some research about the period or product, or about advertising generally, in order to accomplish these goals. This paper is a more standard analytical paper than Essay #1, and should be presented in a standard, academic essay format. However, you will probably find it useful to make use of visuals. Guidelines Word count: 1000-1200 words. You must use one image, and at least two secondary sources that you have found. Format paper according to MLA style. Use 12-point Times New Roman font. Please include your Word Count in the first-page header. Write formally. Write in a clear, professional style.
