An African Voice by Katie Bacon
Chinua Achebe is known worldwide as one of the great pioneers of African literature, in most of his work he tells the African story in a different perspective. The author has written five novels, a number of short stories and poems. In one of his books about his homeland Nigeria Things fall apart, which was one his first book in 1958 Achebe expressed his views on colonization from a victims view . The book became a classic around the globe and is published in fifty different languages.
Speaking in an interview from his home in Newyork recently, the legendary author talked more about his work, experience and thoughts about other issues related to his work. It was both inspirational and educative to many people including myself after reading a journal written by Kate Bacon about it.
The author speaks about the physical and emotional torture inflicted on the African people. Sharing his experience from his native land Achebe says that everybody in the world could relate to his story depending on the situation. In one way or the other one has experienced the pain of being isolated from something they hold dearly for instance: family, culture, homeland and many others. The physical torture stopped and many people in the African countries like Nigeria thought that the discrimination and hate would halt. This was not the case, the narrative still continues up to date through art, literature, media and other sources used today to show how much Africa is different from the rest of the world but not in a good way of course.
African leaders who took over after the colonialists also took advantage to root resources from their own people. Chinua hence is clear about something, it is the work of all leaders to create a bridge between the powerful and the powerless despite the race, origin or language. Also one should accept to learn and change for the better, for instance majority of African people and leaders should learn peaceful transition of power from the united states of America.
