ANITAB.ORG
AnitaB.Org is a non-profit organization based in California founded by Anita Borg and Telle Whitney. AnitaB.Org guide, inspires, and connect women in technical fields and computing as well as the training institutions and the organizations that employ them.
Do they call themselves a feminist organization? Why or why not?
AnitaB.org is not a feminist organization because it only seeks to help women in technical fields develop their full potential rather than prompting policies that address female poverty, sexual harassment, or gender discrimination among other social issues.
What does this organization appear to do that is most beneficial?
AnitaB.org supports women in computing and technical fields by fostering several programs that help women learn, grow, and develop capacities to achieve their highest potential. The organization has some programs such as the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference, which is aimed at elevating the influence of women in all technological aspects (“Our History”). The conference features career and technical sessions such as poster sessions, keynote speakers, career fairs, and awards ceremony, which mentor and inspire women in technical fields.
What else might they do?
AnitaB.org can engage in other activities apart from supporting women in technical fields only. The organization can also support women in other fields such as leadership and non-technical fields. The organization can also sponsor individuals from disadvantaged social backgrounds in education and provision of social support. The organization can also extend its operations to include the general population rather that restricting its services to women only.
