An Explanation for Part-time Enrolment

Early last year, I was compelled to make a hard decision; to withdraw from my Differentiation Equation class. After trying to engage my professor for a while without success, I was finally granted access to virtual lecture meetings about a week into the semester. I was already behind in watching past lecture videos and quiz material. This did not pose a challenge for me. However, this was also when the government stay at home order was lifted amid the highest presence of the Covid-19 pandemic.

I live with my single mother, whose income is earned through physical interaction with parlor clients. She works 12 hours daily, and at 60 years of age, she is susceptible to the pandemic. This put immense emotional distress, which made catching up on my class a lot more complicated. I would be obliged to wear a mask around my mom and have anxiety whenever she would lead out a sneeze or cough. I feared for my safety as well, knowing that I am also in the front line of exposure since my mother can be asymptomatic from the virus, and there would be no possible way to determine if I had the virus or not. The psychological discomfort I was going through could not allow me to concentrate on classwork, hence my withdrawal to ease the emotional situation. However, I enrolled in the class for spring 2021, and I am looking forward to completing the class.
