Application essay to the nursing program at the University of Florida
Enrolling in the nursing program is a goal aspired to by many. Having watched my neighbour whom, we considered as family battle up with a terminal disease; I dedicated my after-school hours to attend to her. Nursing her on the weekends increased our bond with each other to the last day. I always managed to add a smile to her face whenever I brought her a hamburger. That filled me with delight. The ability to care for her came naturally to me, and the more the reason I would love to pursue it professionally.
The calling became realized when my elderly neighbour, Mrs Johnson passed on. I suddenly felt an emptiness in my life. I was used to caring for her. It had become a part of me, and I loved doing it. I felt the need to give the same care to more people in the future. It led me to enrol in the Family clinic, which serves a mostly poor and homeless population. It led to me caring for a lot of children and interact with their families. It involved changing beddings and making the patients feel comfortable. I helped administer medicine to the children. Volunteering has helped me discover my path. When I see patients trapped in the hospital and a moment in time by their disease, I talk to them. For six hours a day, three times a week. One time a six-year-old was brought in having trouble breathing. I got her comfortable, took her vital signs, and got involved in her session with the physician. I went to follow up on her condition at an extra mile by visiting her home to check up on her. I was relieved to find that she was improving quite well.
I am glad that I was able to brighten the last days of Mrs Johnson. She triggered my passion in the direction of medicine. The family clinic gave me closure. I would love to continue providing care as a tribute to Mrs Johnson. To make this dream mature, I believe that the University of Florida is the gateway for this dream to be realized.
