Application of statistics in health care

Application of statistics in health care has helped healthcare professional analyze the conditions they are dealing with, and compare with conditions and trends in state, national and international statistics. The application of health statistics in health care is based using the empirical data provided by statistics personnel and agencies to make decisions that will ensure there is better service delivery and innovation advancement in health (Barbara A. Bartkowiak, 2004). By having health statistics, health care has a point of making an allocation decision on public and private funds to focus on research. Health care statistics give attention to health concerns, medical advancement, varying treatment approaches, pharmaceutical review, and mortality to ensure that decisions made in the areas are guided by documented opinions, experiences and repercussions of previous practices.

Quality

The significance of applying statistics in health care to improve quality is widely recognized due to the changes that have occurred over the years. When there is availability of treatment efficacy statistics, health care providers advance to the ethical and accepted treating practices that guarantees quality. Quality improvement relies largely on findings based on current practices. Quality in health care is signified by reduced rate of occurrence for adverse events that show signals of assignable cause variation. Adverse events in healthcare cause distress signals in operations that warrant unusual observations. Any harm emanating from modifying causes is identified and remedied to improve quality. By using the available statistics, meaningful interceptions are made and treating practices are monitored to observe if there will be any signals of assignable cause variation (Hagan, 2018). The application of statistics in health care to improve quality requires sensitizing rules that should before data collection.

Safety

Health care professionals have an intrinsic obligation to ensure patient harm is avoided. Safety must be upheld, and data must be used to understand patient harm and how to deal with it. Statistics on patient harm have resulted to health care adopting application of recommended practices such as machine learning and predictive analytics. Safety is a prioritization in health since people come to hospitals to seek care and not harm. Statistics on safety ensure that there are quality improvement measures in the continuum of care integrating clinical, operational data and cost (Pestotnic, 2017). A successful health system requires use of statistics to promote safety by having predictive analytics and proper knowledge of machine operations.

Health promotion

People are able to manage and control their own health through understanding health metrics provided from statistics. The actions of people and structural change influenced by statistics have ensured constant improvements on health promotion by promoting working methods. Salutogenesis and health risk factors have been emphasized as the essential points of understanding the actions needed to improve health promotion practices. Health practices are adjusted from the observations of statistics and the knowledge acquired to understand the concepts thus reducing the inequalities in health, and promote community participation. Statistics helps in understanding the causes that have led to changes in health promotion, and proper measures are mitigated to ensure there are solutions.

Leadership

Health care requires constant reforms that are only effective if there is adaptability in leadership. Statistics in healthcare aim at addressing efficient delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality care to the management and oversight bodies overlooking healthcare practices. Statistics ensure there is change in leadership approaches that ensure there changes are implemented across all sections of the healthcare system. The management and medical personnel have the leadership mandate, and all recommendations guided by statistics seek their leadership input in reforms and goals realization in healthcare organizations (Reuben Olugbenga Ayeleke, 2017). Statistics ensure that leadership meets essential competencies and proper trainings are done for effective performance.

Application of statistics in my organization

In my organization of long-term care geriatric patients, I utilize statistical data to answer the emerging questions emerging from researches done on long-term care geriatric patients. The research helps me know current medical recommendations and understand the status of operations at my organization compared to other organizations. I also utilize statistical data by checking signals of assignable cause variation in my organization and understand measures that might have resulted to the systematic errors. I obtain statistical data through state, national and international bodies with extensive coverage of long-term care geriatric patients. The statistical data is used in day-to-day operations to improve ethics and accepted care practices, understand patient harm and how to deal with it, reducing the inequalities in health and improve leadership approaches.

In my organization, statistical data is used in decision making by analyzing the data and information to understand the areas that need transformation and improvement. I have used statistics data to place healthcare problems in my organization in the right context. This has helped me make decisions that address the affected departments other than making turnaround changes to the whole organization. I have found risks and opportunities by using statistical data that showed vulnerabilities in my organization.
