ARE NUTS GOOD FOR GUINEA PIGS?

Raw nuts are packed with a high amount of fats. When fed to a small-bodied animal, like a guinea pig continually, they cause more harm than good. The little pet risks becoming obese, leading to difficulty in the assimilation of the nutrients they need to survive.  However, when roasted, they lose some of these fats, making them a little friendlier to the pet’s health.

What is their nutritional value?

Nuts are loaded with health benefits. They contain monosaturated and unsaturate

d fats that are essential for organisms. These fats are, among others, linoleic acid and vitamin

E and B2. They also contain fibers. Fiber is vital for a healthy stomach lining and prevents the passage of loose stool.

Additionally, minerals present in nuts include selenium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorous, and copper.

Roasting nuts reduces antioxidants and fats along with other beneficial elements. The heat also reduces the fattening compounds of nuts.

Nuts generally lower the risk of contracting life-threatening diseases like cancer and stroke heart disease, among others.  They are among the top recommended foods that are said to reduce the chances of early untimely death in humans.

This might not be the case in a guinea pig since their metabolism and absorption of food is different. Excessive eating may result in the accumulation of excess fat, leading to obesity.  This

will lower the rate of absorption of essential minerals to various organs. Eventually, it becomes life-threatening.

Are they suitable for guinea pigs?

Almonds are maybe the only documented nuts, poisonous for guinea pigs.  However, the high amount of

fats may not be too good for them. They should be given to the

pet in moderation.  Too much and frequent feeding will lead to obesity.

As a pet owner, aim for healthier meals that will benefit your pet.  This reduces the number of trips you make to the vet.  Nuts should

be given as occasional . You might opt for a small amount of peanuts, though they will not have any significant effect.

The recommended diet for a guinea pig consists of good quality Timothy Hay and clean, freshwater. You can also give supplements and guinea pig pellets that are enhanced with vitamin C. With these, you are assured that the immunity of your pet has been appropriately boosted.

Are derivatives recommended for a guinea pig?

Though common, peanut butter is not recommended for the

guinea pig. It has too much sugar, which may be harmful to the small pet. It also poses a choking hazard due to its sticky nature.  It should never be fed to your pet.

Some people will result in shells of the peanut, but these too are no good.  They lack any nutritional value and may end up injuring your pet.  Roasted nuts are also not

recommended as they end up as fattening agents for your pet. They may also contain excess salts and harmful additives.

What is the concluding answer?

Whether raw or roasted, nuts should never be fed to a guinea pig.
