Argumentative Essay on Jobs
Work is defined in several dimensions. Some people see work as the activity performed by a person, where the performer (worker) uses his or her mental and physical energy to perform that task. Often, there is a reword for working where, in many cases, people work for economic benefits such as money. Some define work as the material that a person uses at the workplace or the activity’s product. For example, furniture may be referred to by a carpenter as his or her piece of work. Work is also defined by the results or the energy put forth by people, especially for the artists who do paintings, music, and books. For example, arts at the museum are always regarded as pieces of work from the artists. Thus, it may be ascertained that from whatever dimension one wants to define work, it can be understood since it spread across all domains of life. At times people do specific works, not because they want to, but because they are obligated to do it. Due to the low economy at some people’s homes, individuals travel to other countries to seek jobs, thus becoming immigrants to these countries. However, the bottom line is, whether local or foreign, work ought to be completed. The text below asserts the fact that Jobs are a blessing; however, the society or people look at the worker, drawing “Immigrants (We Get the Job Done)” by K’naan featuring Riz MC & Tha Product and “Work is a Blessing” by Rusel Honore.
There is the notion that wages in a specific field of work are not enough. As argued above, work attracts the economic domain; people work to earn a living. Mostly for one to be employed or work on something, he or she must be looking for economic status; for example, the people who do art as a profession, they do it so that they could sell it and maintain or upkeep their families. Thus, in this notion, work enables people to take care of their families. However, as people claim, the money earned is often too little to cater to the family. However, it can be ascertained that human wants are too many, which require resources to be fulfilled. On the other hand, resources are scarce in supply, thus explaining why human needs cannot be fully satisfied by a given work. Economists in their arguments state that human wants are insatiable, meaning that one cannot fully satisfy the human wants. Thus people will work in their various fields trying to make ends meet, attesting hos the jobs are blessings and fundamental for survival.
Those who get the hand-to-mouth kind of jobs and have children will always get complaints from their children about the kind of life they are living in. For example, Rusel Honore, while young, he questioned the type of work his parents did and even complained about the hard work that he was being given to milk the cows. To Rusel Honore, working was strenuous and not favorable to him. However, he was made to start seeing the importance of working other than just seeing the negative side. For instance, in reply to Rusel Honore’s complaints, his father states, “Ya Know, boy, to work is a blessing” (Honore par. 2). Even though Rusel Honore did not see the essence of this statement, he came to ascertain it later in his adulthood that indeed people who have jobs are the luckiest on the planet.
Professional certification is a requirement in the contemporary world for professional jobs. Parents often direct their children to select the right courses to get the right jobs in the future. However, as attested by Rusel Honore’s father, “Even having a job you hate is better than not having a job at all” (Honore par. 3). It means that one may go into a field that he is not passionate about, but it remains essential to work regardless of the passion for making ends meet. Education often shapes a person in the carrier to the extent that despite the fact he or she does not like the profession, his skills and competencies are fit for the job. Rusel Honore’s father’s words attest to the fact that a job is a blessing regardless of the type of job (Honore par. 6)
The introduction of the current technology has proposed the insurgence of machinery into workplaces. The education equipped with a person helps him or her perform specific tasks or operate these machines. The purpose of machines at workplaces is to make work easier and save humankind, instead of strenuous activities. For example, Rusel Honore advocates for machines to break the bricks, making work easier for the woman working on those bricks with a baby on her back (Honore par. 6). Thus the insurgence of machines at workplaces is seen as a revolution of the task force in the working environment and making the work easier. A blessing is often something given or added to someone. Thus, machines are given to people to make work easier. On another scope, one may view the job given to this woman in Bangladesh whom Rusel Honore came across in the late 1980s, as a blessing. Because of this job, she could earn money to feed herself and her baby daily, asserting the blessings. Rusel Honore reconfirms that as bad as the woman’s job was, it was enough to keep the small family alive (Honore par. 6).
As Rusel Honor opines, “People without Jobs are not free” (Honore par. 7). Assertively, a person without a job will be tempted to engage in illegal activities to get money. The people without jobs are the ones who may be found engaging in terrorism or joining the terrorist groups, having poor health, social unrest, and depression, and even victims of other more significant crimes. In contrast, people who have jobs can build their homes, take their kids to a decent school, and positively contribute to the community development; thus, working is a blessing and an aspect of freedom.
Working, however, is not all that is encompassed in freedom. Immigrants are sometimes seen as a bad influence, regardless of their efforts at work. Some countries are founded by immigrants but pass laws that are not in favor of the immigrants. For example, the USA is primarily founded by immigrants. Even those who claim to be the Native Americans are the red Indians. Nations like these pass laws that are against the immigrants claiming that immigrants are a threat to security. However, people who think immigrants are a source of insecurity in their country have not thought of the immigrants moving from their motherlands.
Even though Rusel Honore views freedom in terms of work, those who work are free, while those who do not work are not free; K’naan, Riz MC & Tha Product, have a different perspective of freedom. To them, the immigrants are not free whatsoever. Although “They get the work done,” freedom to them is not yet as the nation has united against them. K’naan argues that he can have several jobs when he needs them since the “immigrants get the job done,” but they are not yet free” (Hamilton, min.1). Their lack of freedom is ascertained by their loneliness since K’naan sings, “I have got five roommates in this room but is do not see them” (Hamilton min.2). They live in the dark for fear in America. In their quest, they came into the nation to seek freedom, but that is contrary to what they are getting. Immigrants in the US economy play a critical role. As the song attests, “… racist feeds the belly of the beast with the pitchforks rich chores done by the people that get ignored” (Hamilton min.3). Here the people who are ignored and sidelined are the immigrants.
To be an immigrant, he does not have to cross the American borders with “thrifty supplies” (Mamilton, min.2). The immigrants ought to see the world with new eyes in order to stop risking their lives. Those who discriminate against the immigrants do not do the essential chores, but they do these chores. To the American immigrants, it is not yet freedom; they are the ones hustling on every level. They are the people working in the shadows for the prosperity of the nation. Thus, they continue doing the job, which is a blessing to them since the job drives the American economy, but American society views them differently.
In conclusion, jobs are a blessing no matter how the society or a person may view the worker. Thus, people should hold on to positions they have, get the job done, and earn a living. It is not how society views persons that define them; it is the inner skills and capabilities that will define them. All the people in the society, regardless of their gender and race, should work together to build the society and avoid discrimination.
