Describe an experience when you had to adjust to a culture other than your own.
The task and uncertainty that comes with moving to a different country presented a great culture shock to me. Being the only one in a group who feels like a stranger, it made me realize I had to be keen to adapt. Whatever I did was different from the rest, so I was worried my actions could be viewed from the perspective culture of that community. The way one masters such differences and grabs them as an opportunity to learn changes a lot. The cultures can be different, but the will to learn is what matters.
When I first moved to the United States, the language and way of life were different from my own. The ascent, the food, prices of commodities, among others. The only similarity was the dress codes. I was conspicuous from the crowd. Despite having taken lessons and watched channels on YouTube about the American way of life, I could still walk on the streets and understand nothing from what passers-by were engaging. Going into malls and groceries was weird, as the prices of items were way above my expectations. The nightlife was extravagant. House parties were way of life, and people here go crazy for basketball and soccer. All I had to do was relax, take my chances, and make new friends. Slowly, I started making way towards soccer matches, community engagement centers, and the gym. Then friendships began to develop, grow, and now, am an American. So far, I have found a home in my new neighborhood, adapted to the language, culture, and sports as well.
My experience of a different culture was exciting, stressful, adventurous, and an exploratively challenging process. My period of cultural adjustment was significant, as I interacted with more than ten individuals from various diversities. All with the same goal, to adapt to the American culture, and of course, maintain ours deeply inside. The support offered through the transition period made it a memorable journey. It impacted me both personally and academically.
The American traditions, values, and social norms bring the best from an active and open-minded individual. Entirely different from other cultures’ operations. My new environment strained me to the edges, where I almost fell like despair. However, they say fortune favors the bold, and I was brave, agile, and ready for my new adventure. I was prepared to brace the confusion and disorientation that came my way. After all, to survive, you must adjust.
I was homesick, nervous, and mentally exhausted. Winter was unbearable. Coming from a culture where temperatures have never gone below ten degrees Celsius, how was I supposed to manage the negatives outside the household? Well, many were doing it, and they were okay, so I had to. That was a self-conviction, and it paid off greatly. Sleep departed me, and insomnia took over. I just wanted to see the streets through my activities. Social events were had to attend, as the music and food were still a bit strange, though I was starting to get the rhyme, especially on the food. I could not concentrate on my orientation schedule past an hour. Many things irritated me on the streets. I wished I could reverse the time and start my whole childhood here. This was my adventure, and I had to overcome the hurdles. Now you can confuse me to a native-born American.
For sure, culture is relative. One can only perceive other cultures as different, but never label them as bad or good. Exposure to various cultures is just like learning a new subject altogether, like introducing Financial Economics university units to a high school student. Be curious and open-minded, change your values, and respect those of your colleagues. Whatever new, unfamiliar situations may bring, grab them as new adventures and learning experiences. Being observant of the actions of others goes a long way since not everything will be covered in culture adjustment programs. Both verbal and nonverbal communication aspects are essential when addressing others, so observing the complete picture of events is necessary. In situations of uncertainties, ask questions or seek help from those around you.
Adapting to cultures is a process, so finding a new cultural ally can be exceedingly useful. Finding an American friend is necessary, as they can be your consultant and guide. They can help you clear your doubts about various issues, get a second opinion, and ease your interaction with your new environment. Remember to stay healthy and have room for mistakes. With time, I am a better citizen now.
