Assessment 3: Research Proposal for aboriginal history

  • Not the same as the short paper.
  • Not a draft of the short paper.
  • Rather: like an essay plan
  • Introduction – context, background (brief 200-300)
  • Source review – Source 1, Source 2, Source 3, OR three sources in relation to a

common idea. (400-500 words)

  • Rationale – a conclusion of sorts: why is this site important to write about for the

short paper? How does it relate to course ideas? (300-400 words)

  • You may write the paper as a critical research essay, perhaps interrogating the site, its function, and/or representations and public engagement.
  • You may write the paper as an educative research essay, perhaps drawing together different sources to provide important information about the site and its significance.
  • You may write the paper as an action-focused research essay, perhaps drawing conclusions about future public engagement, gaps in research, or recommended changes to the physical/material landscape.
  • HARVARD or OXFORD referencing style

Research Proposal: 1000 words (+/- 10%), due 6th September.

The research proposal is where you develop and demonstrate your goal for the short paper .

It requires you to choose ONE site, place, building, event, or organisation1 based in the greater Sydney area & relevant to course ideas/concepts2 : (choose one site below)

  • Gweagal Shield
  • Cook Statue Hyde Park
  • First Government House / Edge of Trees
  • Redfern Park / Oval
  • Welcome to Redfern Mural
  • Black Theatre / Gadigal Radio Redfern

The proposal should include:

  • brief introduction to your chosen site, place, building, event, or organisation (I’ll use SITE to include all these terms)
  • review of THREE different sources that inform your understanding of the SITE3
  • rationale for the short paper that argues the relevance of this SITE for understanding selected course ideas/concepts4 5

While the short paper is a research essay, designed to encourage your close reading and investigation of a SITE, you will need to define your own aims and intended audience to help with style and purpose. e.g. is it a critical essay? is it educative? is it action-focused?
