Assignment 1: Paraphrasing (Option 1)
Morrison’s Inspiration writing Sula in 1969 comes from a period of intense activism from the African American Community who demanded equality in civil rights and opportunities. As such, the book highlights sensitive issues such as racism and prejudice, which contributed to African Americans’ oppression and discrimination. The Author displays a sense of hopelessness for the Black community in constant life struggles of looking for a well-paying job and fends for their families. For example, Eva amputates her leg to look after her family. Consequentially the book outlines the two kinds of African Americans who existed at the time; ones willing to beg the white man like Helene and the others who were ready to fight back and refuse to be discriminated like Sula.
