Biblical Stories on Callings
I chose the calls of Abraham, Moses, and the disciples Peter and Andrew. In the call of Abraham (Genesis 12:1), Yahweh said to him through a dream to leave his father’s house and go to a land He will show him. He was promised a great nation and blessings (Callings, pp.13). This calling demonstrated faith and belief in Him. On the other hand, Yahweh called Moses (Exodus 3:1-15, 4: 10-17) through a burning bush while looking after Jethro’s sheep. He was tasked with leading Israelites out of Egypt to Canaan, the Promised Land (Callings, pp 14). Moses was promised to guide him through the quest because he complained of his ineloquence deficiency of words or courage. The only benefit to responding was the Promised Land. Yahweh used this call to demonstrate He was all-powerful than the Egyptian gods. It was also a means of delivering His promise to Israelites. In Mathew 4: 18-22, Jesus calls brothers Peter and Andrew to discipleship while they were fishing at Galilee. They are promised to be fishers of man instead of fish (Callings, pp 18). This was important in Jesus’s plan to evangelize across Israel during that time. Also, the disciples would be teachers later after He ascended into heaven.
The similarity exists in the fact that all these people called responded to their calls. Moses hesitated due to his deficiencies, but God convinced him by promising guidance. Similarly, each story demonstrates faith in God, like Abraham, Moses, and the disciples believe the calls and respond. Besides, there is a promise in each calling. These stories illustrate that following Christ and believing in Him is the root of all other life purposes.
