Book Analysis
La Nueva Novela
The primary language used by the author is considered near to scientific. This is because Luis talks a lot about combined scientific theories of time, space, geology, logic and algebra. The form of expression in these poems is considered problematic as it takes a mixture of visual linguistics for a reader to understand. Due to this, the writer’s poetic message is misunderstood by many. Only few intellectual readers find his work entertaining. Word and image selection keep the reader in a state of hesitation at the same time passing a comprehensive message (Martínez, Juan Luis, and Juan de Dios Martínez). The heading ‘La Nueva Novela’ appears to many as a contradiction to the message in the novel.
La Bandera de Chile
This poem gives an important message of liberation. The ideas expressed in the poem show bravery. Elvira had the idea of writing from the underground, using context from submerged spaces. This is a technique that represents the forgotten people in the society. She stood in support of women rights and against gender discrimination. Hence these become the main themes in her work.
Cada dia Neustadt
Cada dia is Latin for ‘every day.’ The dominant theme is love where the author narrates how a spirit falls in love with the same girl in different generations. The author uses fictional language and scenes to capture the audience’s attention. This was a narrative technique to show the love and loyalty of Chileans to their country. Despite the challenges of poor leadership, the love for their country was intact (Centeno, Miguel Angel, et al., 279). There was thirst for political liberation during the time the poem was written. In summary, the book talks about the existence of a spirit in more than one body in that, the spirit occupies a new body once the current one becomes lifeless. The spirit follows their soul mate, falling in love with the same person each time the reincarnate.
Guillermo Gomez
Guillermo uses a collection of poems, essays and poems to talk about problems facing the state of Chile. The main conflicts were on race, gender, nationality and language. The language used by the author was that of peace and coexistence. Gomez uses hybrid identity as a narrative technique. This allows him to change from the different themes as he brings out the intended message. However, this bothers some audiences as it takes time to realize the change and some may get lost in the story. The new boarder was not a literal concept as the boarder was more of a mental state. Generally, the new border gives a brief story of the rise of a new state of togetherness brought by coming together of two conflicting groups.
Mi Vida despues
The play dramatizes on the aftermath effects of dictatorship in Argentina. The main themes in the play are pain, memory and monopoly of power. The author shows a traumatic scene where relatives of actors disappear. This promotes togetherness as they try to console each other. Thus the theme of unity is also upheld. The play also uses fiction as a narrative technique. This is seen through the literal disappearance of people.
Mini Essays
Politics in the New Novel
Politics in this book is seen as one of the main themes. The book was written during the dictatorship era of Pinochet. Leadership of Pinochet was considered antagonistic ambiguous and materialistic. He was selfish and used his power for self-gain. In the book, the author used material elements to portray his character. Symbols such as papers and images are incorporated. The use of color also was symbolic as the intensity symbolized the wrath experienced by the citizens from the leadership. On the other hand, the life of the author was also dramatic and chaotic. This went hand in hand with the theme described in the book.
Patriotism and Female Subject in Elvira’s book
Elvira can be described as a feminist as she advocated greatly for equal gender. This is seen when she declined the appeal for nomination for her book in the women’s category. She claimed that women have equal mind to that of men hence should be given an equal chance to compete with men in from the same field. She fought for female rights without fear (Martínez-Esparza, Elvira Hernández).
In politics, the book was written during the era of Pinochet. She describes the patriotism of people who showed her support for the fight of human rights advocating for political liberation. The reign of Pinochet saw the torturing and murder of defiant people. The Chilean citizens hang the flag of Chile from their windows as a sign of togetherness.
The Chilean Flag as a Symbol of Nationalism
The flag in most states is considered as a symbol of national unity. The two authors prove this as it was evidently showcased during the dictatorial era of Pinochet. This was a time of political nightmare where they were faced with instability and chaos. Political parties were banned and any defiant person was killed. The flag however gave hope for liberation among the Chilean citizens. As they raised it high, it gave them hope that one day they would be free. With motivation from such authors, the citizens became united and fought. Martinez also used the flag as a symbol of unity.
The theory and praxis in CADA
Praxis refers to acceptable practices in the society distinguished in a theory. In the collection of cada dia, the author talks about a spirit that keeps coming back to life in different bodies. This practice is not a realistic one as it is not prone to happening. It is considered superstitious and is in most cases triggered by sorcerous powers. Sorcery in some communities is a normal way of life while in others it is shameful and illegal.
However, there is a contradiction in how the whole concept is delivered. Love is meant to be sweet and connective unlike the concept of praxis in life. Bringing the two opposite concepts together creates a confusing environment for the audience to understand and interpret.
The Concept of Boarders
In the New World, Guillermo explains a conflicting coexistence between the Northern and Southern boarders. The inhabitants of the two communities had contradicting cultures and this led to unending wars. However, there came a time when some individuals from the two communities came together. The union caused confusion as they would not tell which culture is best to follow. Thus they ended up creating a new boarder in themselves, a change in mindset.
In the times of this novel, it was with the aim of mobilizing people to keep away their differences. The conflicts going on happened as a result of political leadership. However, the book gave hope for better days ahead if only people came together.
Post Memory in ‘My Life After’ by Lola
The play showcased the recreation of memories by six young actors. The young adults had the chance to visit their parent’s lives by use of pictures, tapes, memories and stories. Lola shows how at a very young age, she would wear her mother’s dresses and shoes, walk with them. Though with difficulties, she enjoyed the feel of being an adult. Now that she was old enough, she tried on some of her mother’s trousers which would now fit perfectly.
The literal fitting of clothes and shoes shows the urge of a young person to grow up. However, once they are all grown they feel the need to understand the reasons for their behavior. Intergenerational connection was created as the parents and children engaged in activities together. Past memory helps one to understand the reason for a current recurring or new behavior.
Performance in CADA, GGP and Lola Arias
The performance in the three plays was commendable. The use of props that were clothes, pictures, tapes and color was detailed. The common narrative technique was fictional. From my life after to the plays by Guillermo, the use of memories is not realistic. They tried to create imagery in the mind of audiences creating beautiful scenes. The mind is able to remember the past and focus on the future. Fiction of disappearance of actors is also observed in the plays by Guillermo.
