Brad Sherman is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives under the Democratic Party
Brad Sherman is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives under the Democratic Party. He has been a member of the house since 1997 when he represented California’s 24th Congressional District, and currently, he is presenting California’s 30th Congressional District up to 2021. Sherman was born on October 24, 1954, by Maurice and lane Sherman in Los Angeles, and his parents were of Russian Jewish origins. He is a certified public accountant and a lawyer who attained his early education in Corona del Mar High School and Mark Keppel high school. He has also studied at the University of California and Harvard law school in his advanced studies. Before joining the congress, Sherman got involved in teaching at Harvard law school as well as working for big auditing firms in the United States and abroad (Jewish Virtual Library, 2020). He served as a member and later the chair for the board of California state board of equalization between 1991 and 1995.
Since his first term in 1997, Sherman has represented California’s 24th Congressional District, California’s 27th Congressional District and currently California’s 30th Congressional District. During his time in the house of Representatives, Sherman has advocated for federal education aid, better environmental standards, working families interests, fiscal responsibility, export expansion, Medicare and social security. His background in law and tax studies has enabled him to bring various legislation in the House of Representatives as well as advocate for the formation of the consumer financial protection act. Many attribute his extended stay in the congress to his fight for the rights of the ordinary citizen. He recently became famous throughout the world for his article pushing for the impeachment of President Donald Trump on cases of obstruction of justice and other crime but the impeachment which was not passed
His passion for running for office is considerably associated with protecting the rights of the working families. He also wanted to ensure that the united stated economy was strong and Wall Street firms did not exploit citizens. Since he is of Jewish origin, he wanted to fight against discrimination based on race. His law background also encouraged him to ensure that all citizens were served equally by the government and other bodies. It is due to this that throughout his political career, Sherman pushed for the establishment of social security and Medicare, strengthening the United States’ relationship with other countries and protecting the environment, amongst others.
Due to his political and educational experience, Sherman serves on various committees. He is a senior member of the committee on foreign affairs and the committee on financial services and a member of the committee on science, space and technology. Other than the committees, he also serves in the subcommittee on housing, community development and insurance, Subcommittee on National Security, International Development, and Monetary Policy and the Subcommittee on Investor Protection, Entrepreneurship, and Capital Markets, where he is the chairman (Sherman.house.gov, 2020). He also serves as in the Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Nonproliferation and the Subcommittee on Middle East, North Africa, and International Terrorism. Finally, Sherman serves in the Subcommittee on Research and Technology.
Sherman has sponsored various legislation in the House of Representatives as well as cosponsoring others. Some of the legislation that he has currently sponsored include the Homeless Assistance Act of 2019, Homebuyer Assistance Act of 2019 and the amendment of the national defence authorization act for the fiscal year 2020. The homeless assistance act of 2019 pushed for the sharing of data of homeless families and individuals by public housing agencies to enable the government to provide housing and other services. The House of Representatives has passed this bill with its motion having no objections. It is currently in the hands of the senate. The homebuyer assistance act of 2019, on the other hand, was to amend the National Housing Act and authorize appraisals by state-licensed appraisers regarding FHA insured mortgages compliance with the existing requirements, among other reasons. The bill got passed by the House of Representatives on roll call votes, where 419 members agreed and five opposed (Govtrack, 2020). Finally, the amendment of the national defence authorization act for the fiscal year 2020 prohibited defence funds and articles transfer to Azerbaijan unless authorized by the president. A vote of 234 against 195 passed the amendment. Mainly Sherman legislations are supported by members of the Democratic Party and opposed by the republicans.
I would describe Brad Sherman as a competent legislator in the House of Representatives. Since his election in 1997, Sherman has brought various legislation in the house of Representatives. Earlier in 1998, he advocated for the amendment of the annual budget resolution, thus allowing for the provision of an extra $700 million for the protection of environmentally relevant lands. Sherman also made it possible for the formation of the consumer financial protection agency, which protects consumers from overexploitation by financial institutions. Also, in 2009 he led to the development of legislation that ended bailout of the financial institution, which he accused of having risky financial behaviours. It is through his efforts that Sherman earned a 100% rating from league of conservation voter, sierra club, AFL-CIO, AFSME and SEIU. Some of his legislation has also advocated for noise protection, fiscal policy, housing, better foreign relations, health care and social security, civil liberties, internet policy, LGBT rights and gun control, among others (Congress.gov, 2020). His continuous election in the congressman position since 1997 shows that Brad Sherman is at the heart of American citizens and thus a competent legislator. Some of his bills, including the H.R. 4646, H.R. 5340 and H.R. 1794 crafted in the 109th, 107th and 105th congress, respectively, have been enacted into law. Band Sherman is thus not just an effective legislator but one of the best legislators that have led to considerable improvement in the lives of United States citizens.
