Career Development

Question 1

Culturally competent counselors are able to change their therapeutic approach from one client to another. Counselors need to be rich in different cultures in order for them to use different counseling models when dealing with different clients who may have different counseling needs, and this helps to reduce the monotony of using the same counseling approach for everyone over and over again. However, when changing counseling approaches, counselors should be keen to honor the professional ethics and guidelines for counseling which include observing confidentiality of client’s information. Also, being culturally competent helps the counselors to respect the cultures of different clients (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2013). As a result, the counselors are able to shun using words that may mean otherwise to the client. Understanding and respecting the culture of the clients results in effective counseling both to the client and to the counselor. Additionally, being culturally competent like understanding different languages is crucial because sometimes therapists may receive clients who only understand their local languages. In such situations, the counselor is able to use the local language to facilitate effective counseling.

Question 2

Culture may impact career development in different ways. One way is that people may choose careers where they can be around others who are like them. Individuals identify environments that will allow them to exploit their skills and abilities and freely express their values and attitudes. People of the same type are likely to jointly work in developing an environment that suits and rewards them. Culture influences the type of activities that are carried on in an organization, and this also depends on the culture of the employees employed (Vondracek, Lerner & Schulenberg, 2019). Also, culture influences the types of work incentives that are given in certain organizations. In addition, culture determines the types of employee interactions that are valued in an organization. For example, some cultures do not permit shaking of hands; hence employees are not allowed to shake hands in their working organizations. Therefore individuals are able to choose careers that favor their culture.

Counseling professions can help clients in career development by encouraging the clients to evaluate their skills and strengths. After identifying the client’s skills and strengths, the counselor can help the client suggest areas that fit the client’s skills and strengths. Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey (2013), states that counselors may also consider the education level of the clients, and they may encourage the clients on the educational commitments required for their chosen career paths. Individuals are likely to choose careers that are well paying. Therefore counseling professionals may suggest various earnings for various carious, and then they can help the client to choose the well-paying career and in consideration to the level of education, skills and strengths of the client. Additionally, clients may consider the opportunities for growth or advancement in careers and then help the client choose a career where the client will grow and advance. For instance, education careers may provide more mobility of positions.

Question 3

Individuals are occupying multiple positions in their lives, and the revolution of technology has made this effective. Multiple roles of individuals include parent, student, worker, partner and citizen. Introduction of new technologies has made people perform different things within the same period. For instance, students are now learning online, or through videoconferencing, and this has been made effective by the development of computers. Individuals also do not need to go to offices to work because they can still work from home. While working from home, parent individuals are able to take care of their families. Students while learning from home, they can still play other roles. Multiple roles may facilitate career advancement. For instance, individuals serving different work roles such as nurse and lecture have multiple sources of capital, and thus they may have sufficient funds to advance their careers. However, multiple roles may also hinder career development because the individual may be committed throughout and may not get time to advance their career (Sirgy & Lee, 2018).
