Case Study
The case of People vs Goetz is a very controversial case in that there are a lot of loopholes. On my view the application of the law on the case to acquit all the charges, was an unjust ruling. The fact that Goetz had an unregistered gun was already a danger to the public. He was able to use the gun to shoot and injure three individuals who were unarmed. There was no show of forced robbery or intention to rob Goetz. He also had made abusive and racist comments about Blacks and Spanish, which was suspicious because the victims were Black. According to the police statements which Goetz gave to the police it was clear that he wanted to make sure that he kills all of them. He added that if he had a little more under self-control, he would have fired at Careys forehead. Continuing to say if he had more bullets, he would have shot them again and again.
He had fled the scene of the crime for nine days, which raises more suspicion of if it was deliberate or self-defense. The case had the right evidence which showed the incidence was intentional but could not show if it was attempted murder or self-defense. The dismissal of the charge of possession of unregistered firearm was an unjust case. My opinion remains that justice was not done because of all the loopholes from the statements and the intention to kill an unarmed person due to prior experiences. Also, having to move around with a loaded unregistered weapon is a danger to the public. The four individual who were shot it was not justified that they had the intention to rob or harass Goetz due to the contradictory statements from them.
