CDC workers
After reading the book, I find the purpose of the book different from its title. The title of the next book is “The Next Pandemic” However; the author is sharing about personal experience as a CDC officer in combating the spread of infectious diseases. This makes me believe the purpose of the book was to educate people on the dangers that CDC officers incur while trying to stop the spread of disease.
Yes, the author achieved the purpose mentioned earlier. The author shares personal experiences he encountered as he travelled to different parts of the world to stop the spread. The issues raised in the book include wars in the countries the go-to study diseases. For instance, in Zaire, the author is forced to escape due to the ongoing conflict in the country. The author shared experiences when they were combating infectious diseases including anthrax, bird flu and Ebola.
The primary audience for the book is medical practitioners who deal with preventing the spread of infectious diseases. The book prepares them for hardship experience that they must get ready to go through in the line of duty. However, the book is also suitable for anybody who loves novels to deal with travelling. The book uses simple language, making it ideal for anybody who enjoys reading novels.
Though the central theme of the book is not clear due to the confusing heading, I find the central idea to be the dangers encountered by CDC workers as they move to dangerous zones to help prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Throughout the book, themes such as war and conflict in study areas and risks of being infected are readily available.
The author presents himself as an empathetic person. Throughout the book, the author is engaging and concerned with the wellbeing of people in the regions that have been affected by epidemics. For instance, the author shows care and concern to the family members of the victims and also reassures them that they will be well.
The author appeals to reason by making compliments that may aid the audience to make conclusions. The author states that no country can isolate its public health system. By this, the author reasons that an infectious disease threat in one part is a threat to the whole world. For instance, swine flu which killed more than 2000 Indians was also the cause of cases in Canada and the United States.
The preface part at the beginning of the book enlightens what the author discusses throughout the book. In this part, the author examines what prompted him to write the book. He explains that the ability to have participated in many CDC projects inspired him to write the book. As a result, the book is expected to present the experiences.
The two tones that are present in the book are informal and cautionary. There is a lot of informality in the book because the book is more of autobiography, and the content cannot be justified academically. Second, the tone of the book is cautionary as it creates awareness and reminds the audience that infectious disease will always outbreak and it is the duty of CDC workers hard to challenge its spread from the locality.
At the beginning of the book, the tone encourages a person to continue reading the book. The author starts by sharing personal experiences as a CDC worker, and thus the tone would help a reader to continue reading the book.
At the end of the book, the author uses a cautionary tone which becomes a bit serious. At this section, the author reasons that people must know how to live in future at a time of pandemic outbreaks. The role of this tone is to make readers perceive the author’s opinions with seriousness.
