Child Development Discussion
What website/organization did you explore in-depth? If you were a parent of a child with either of these two disabilities, how would you rate the website? What information did you find that you believe would be useful for parents? How did the website connect you to other families of children with disabilities or to additional community resources?
The organization I explored in-depth was United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of San Diego County. As a parent of a child with Cerebral Palsy, I would rate this organization nine out of ten on a scale of one to ten. Firstly, having a child with Cerebral Palsy negatively impacts the parent in a variety of ways. The most common issue for most parents is whether the child will get employment in the future. However, UCP of San Diego County provides a solution to these problems by offering assistive technology that enables the child to gain skills essential for learning, working, and participation in school. By doing so, the organization relieves parents of the enormous responsibilities involved in caring for a child with Cerebral Palsy.
The information that I believe to be useful for parents is the in-depth description of Cerebral Palsy (CP). Since most parents lack an adequate understanding of the disability, the information will provide important knowledge. From this information, parents can understand that Cerebral Palsy occurs as a result of damage to specific areas of the brain.
The website connected me to other families of children with disabilities by providing contacts that would assist in obtaining information regarding support groups. As such, the linkage to these support groups will offer an opportunity for me to interact with other parents of children with disabilities. This connection will allow me to share my coping strategies and also receive advice from the members.
