China and Climate Change

Being the world’s leader in emission of greenhouse gases as well as the producer of green energy means that any action China takes along these paths will have a significant impact on its economy (Phil, 2). Luckily for her, the actions China has taken to combat climate change have had an expected stabilizing effect on her economy. For instance, the country’s government has limited excessive use of coal and other polluting energy source to the poor areas of the country. Conversely, it promotes the use of more efficient energy source such electrical power in the more developed localities, such as Beijing City, which reduces emissions in these areas. Thus, only the more apt companies can set base in such cities. Moreover, city dwellers have to work harder to earn enough money to be able to cope with government requirements regarding pollution. Hence, though the workers and industries in poor areas still produce under their capacity, the increased efficiency of these in developed areas make-up for the production discrepancy in the two situations. In this way, the economic trends in the China do not fluctuate much.

Dominic states that one way of making China commit to lead the world in reducing carbon emissions and generating renewable energy is engaging her in international treaties like the Paris agreement (4). According to Climate Action Watch, this strategy would be most effective since the leadership would be held accountable to the global community (5). The treaties could include penalties, e.g., sanctions on goods produced under non-adhering conditions such as using coal energy to force China to cooperate.
