Climate Change is an Urgent Issue we need to do More to Fight It Before It is Too Late
Climate change is becoming an issue of concern across the world. For instance, one such issue is the issue of the greenhouse effect. The rate at which human activities are contributing to climate change is indeed enormous. The big question e still ask ourselves is whether indeed people understand the consequences of their activities to their environment, which will definitely have an impact on their health.
We, humans, are the ones burning fuels and releasing toxic gases into the air that is contributing to global warming leading to variations in climate change at an extreme state. There is enough evidence as to why we urgently need to fight a change towards climate change. For instance, since the 19 century due to the greenhouse effect, the world’s temperature in degree Celsius, according to meteorological studies, has risen by an average of one degree and is showing no signs of slowing down. (Bernauer, 2013) Rather it is showing signs of global climate change becoming worse. Recently, in my adventure, I visited the Antarctic and found out the ice in these environments have broken apart. Besides, taking a review and analysis of wildfire seasons, you will realize that they are taking longer months than usual.
The government of any country has the sole responsibility of safeguarding its environment alongside support from its people, citizens. Over the past 100 years, the environment has not been an area government has concentrated much. Many governments have slowly shifted from the environment to economics. Although environmental policies have been formed by various governments, the environment has proved not to be the core business of the government. The economy of various nations in the world has been given the top priority. Likewise, with the past many years, the technology and way of life have changed due to various technological and machinery inventions aimed at changing the way life. Many of them have been approved by governments as a means to boost the economy of their respective nations without considering their consequences on the environment. Industrialization, especially, has been the key contributing factor towards the adverse climate change the world is experiencing (Broto, 2017).
As much as we are focusing on how, as a people, individually, we can help in the fight towards global climate change, the government has a substantial role through their various political structures. The governments, through its various political action, can change or establish laws or policies which will help in the fight towards global climate change. Examples of such measures I would like the various governmental political structure is the carbo tax policies. Some of the nations have already put in place such a measure. Carbon tax policies have indeed help in regulating the amount of emissions from fossil fuels, especially in large manufacturing corporate firms. According to economists, carbon taxations is an effective and efficient strategy of slowing down the emission of the greenhouse gas effect (Nightingale, 2017). Likewise, this taxation can be strengthened into certain particular sectors of the economy. In the united states, we have seen the EPA proposing the clean power plan for all the power plant firms operating in the country. Besides, such measures have been seen in the transport sector in Europe also (Nightingale, 2017).
Moreover, there is a need for political reframing. This will include the widespread use and integration of discourse of ecological modernization. As much as we have been focusing on the economy while undermining environmental conservation, a discourse of ecological modernization is an effective strategy government can take towards putting economic growth and environmental protection in a mutually as well as supportive and positive win-win relationship (Nightingale, 2017). In addition, governments among various nations need to adopt more radical reframing measures, which will enhance the adoption of resilient policies instead of just focusing on economic growth.
In conclusion, climate change is an issue that is very urgent and needs our attention right now for the sake of our future. With the behaviors that political structures are displaying currently of focusing on economic growth, we will find ourselves in a state where that economic growth won’t thrive to poor climate change. For a better country in all aspects, climate change should be the priority and the answer to creating a suitable environment for all activities. Just imagine how life will be under a globally warmed earth.
