Clinical Field Experience A: Math Lesson Observation
Concept Currently Taught
The level assessed in this project in the fourth grade and the concept taught in geometry. This concept encompasses drawing and identifying angles and lines, and categories shape by the attributes of their angles and lines.
The learners were taught how to draw various angles (obtuse, acute, and right angles) as well as the parallel and perpendicular lines. Consequently, the learners were taught how to identify the angles in the two-dimensional figures. This content is level and age-suitable, and the state’s standards ascertain this content. To successfully teach this content, the teacher employed various techniques.
Instructional strategies
The instruction style includes grouping the students to the groups of fours and giving them charts and pictures with different angles and lines. In this case, the students were able to discuss with each other in their distinctive groups. The other strategy included the use of the whiteboard to draw various angles and lines to illustrate to the students. The learners were required to do the same on their notebooks. Finally, the teacher provided the learners with various models that showed different types of angles. The combination of these strategies promoted the participation and understanding of the learners.
Instructional Resources
This lesson combined several teaching and learning resources to ensure the learners understood everything. The primary resource used in this case is the whiteboard. The teacher utilized it effectively by dividing it into sections to ensure that the work was neat. The other essential resources used are the charts, models, and pictures. These resources were used to illustrate various angles, lines, and two-dimension figures. The lesson or textbooks were likewise utilized by the students to complete the assigned exercises and homework. Writing materials were used by the teacher and the students to write down various concepts on blackboard and notebooks, respectively.
Differentiation
The lesson differentiation was done on the content and the teaching approaches and resources. The content taught varied from lines, angles, and figures. The different content taught killed monotony in the classroom. Further, the teaching strategies were varied to meet the needs of various learners in the classroom. For instance, the use of group discussions and lecture methods ensured that different learners participated in learning. Finally, the resources used in the lesson were varied, the use of pictures, charts, and models attracted the attention of the learners. Some students were interested in charts while others focused on models.
Application to future practice
In my future practice, I will utilize the knowledge acquired during the observation. Keeping order and silence in class is among the things observed. The strategy used by the teacher to maintain order will be employed in future practice to ensure an ideal learning environment. Besides, the use of teaching and learning materials is another observation made, the effective use of these materials is an approach that will be used to ensure the learners optimize the use of these materials. Finally, the group work and the use of teaching and learning aids are other essential observations that will be applied in my practice.
