Coca ColCoca Cola and Pepsi sustainability
It is usually easy to determine the war between Pepsi and coca-cola. However, this becomes very hard when it comes to comparing their sustainability reports. The two companies operate on a worldwide base and have had stiff competition between each other. However, coca-cola has a more significant market share on a global basis. Currently, coca-cola has made the most critical step by outline the company goals over the next ten years. This involves reducing carbon print by 15%
- Minimizing the use of water
- Recovering 100% of packaging
- Increasing recycling
- Phasing out hydrofluorocarbons
- The use of potent greenhouse gas in refrigerators.
However, the company so far has used 300 billion litres of water since 2012, which translates to a 2% change. It has also partnered with the World Wildlife fund to reduce the use of water. However, it plans to improve the efficiency of water usage by 20% by 2022(Ariel Schwartz. 2019). The company also promised to use some local resources such as syrup which comes from sugarcane.
On eth another hand, Pepsi has also made several promises on its sustainability report. This involves;
- Slashing the use of water by 20%
- Slash fuel by 25%
- Cut the use of electricity by 25%
- Removing hydrofluorocarbons from vending machines
Pepsi has also made strides in the sustainability of food such as the SunChip which has been the latest 100% compostable chip bag. However, the company is not perfect since it has been accused of draining aquifers in areas with scarcity of water (Ariel Schwartz. 2019). Also, the company has not made any step to reduce or cut down some of the most poisonous ingredients of its products, such as benzoate compounds.
As much as these two companies have useful sustainability reports, they do not undertake most of their responsibilities as stated. Still, Pepsi outshines coke for its achievable and impressive objectives.
