Communication Skills
Question 1
In organizations where people interact, communication barriers often happen due to misinterpretation and misunderstanding of messages passed across. The communication barrier can result from language when some individuals do not understand the language used, which causes misunderstandings, and this can be removed by using translators or using a universal language that all the members are conversant. The barrier can also be caused by physical separation. It happens when people working on a joint project are located in different regions. The communication is hindered by distance when some concepts need a demonstration, but this can be prevented by using technology such as using video calls.
Another barrier is the status difference. The status difference causes a barrier in communication when people have to communicate up or down the corporate ladder. Some people may feel uncomfortable and not confident enough to deliver well as it should be. The barrier can be overcome by using online communication such as emails so that people do not have to talk on a face to face basis. Gender differences can cause a communication barrier when the communicator is not comfortable addressing another gender. It can be prevented by using a person who is comfortable with a particular gender to pass across the message. Cultural diversity can also cause a barrier in communicating because it becomes difficult to pass across messages to people who do not practice-specific issues in communication. Therefore to overcome this, the message being passed across must take into account that people hail from carrying cultural backgrounds.
