Community Informatics: Evaluating the Effectiveness of ICT Initiatives in the Social Economy

Communication Technologies have been strong growth engines in amidst a private sector context that is capitalist, in that the C-suite is no longer whole without the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) or Chief Information Officer (CIO) presence. Suppose the Technology officer in the private sector is placed side by side with the Finance Officer. In that case, it signals that effective management of technology is of the same importance as the management of money effectiveness which by all measures is a vote of confidence in the potentiality of technology. If attention is directed to i9nitiatives of Community and Social Development, are ICTs swayed as effectively or as considerably as they are in the private sector? Could there be rudimentary barricades to the use of technology effectively?

Community informatics (CI) is viewed as a field of IS in the last few years. It is a section of Social Informatics (SI), that is discerned as the study of the interdisciplinary design, the uses and repercussion of information technology (IT). SI is considered as the comprehension and research study that inspects the deployment and social aspect usage of ICT.  It views the community, social change and how the ICT use is being determined by social forces and practices that help the researcher in understanding and overcoming the technological barriers in the communities.

Accordant with Gurstein, CI is discerned as an interdisciplinary perspective in the community development using ICT, therefore, allowing the communities to let out their full potentialities in ICT (Villanueva-Mansilla, 2017). This research aims to in the framework of CI, come up with a foundation of a study that examines the successes of the community as well as social initiatives where ICT is a substantial constituent. CI is a representation of two definite, although somewhat similar in social interaction. To begin with, how research is carried out by the communities and their comprehension of ICT potential uses. Also, how there are empowerment and enablement of the communities through ICT use, with that, CI is made of two significant parts being practice and research.

Some arguments suggest that there is an emerging need for ways in the opportunities presented by ICT optimization by all society sectors, the opportunities emergence brings about the peoples need in learning and maintaining the options. The use of ICT in support of meeting the community’s goals has started well(Löwstedt,2020). ICT can improve, strengthen and re-energize the community’s capacity together with their organizations in individual work to foster and sustain positive change. ICT role in the Community is what obtain the community’s building. Indeed, there is an excellent measure in the learning from community building and technology viewing as overall mutual for every individual to have a chance in participating instead of being mutually exclusive and making a decision of including several people from the community.

Notably, with the efforts of the community in ICT initiatives, there will be no survival of the Community Informatics sustainability. There should be transparency in the implementation of ICTs in communities to ensure that it is made useful in the cost-effectiveness, competitiveness and productivity influence in any industry, whether directly or indirectly.
