CORIAN COUNTERTOP

Corian is a mixture of solid stone materials such as (aluminium and granite) and plastics. Corian countertops are made by putting the heated mix of the materials into moulds which then creates solid sheets when it cools.

LOOK AND FEEL

The countertop has a soft colour with depth despite its total consistency. However, most people prefer the look of natural granite being better than solid-surface material. They are softer than a stone to touch and it is most prone to scratches which usually make its appearance dull over time.

RARITY

Corian is still being considered one of the most popular solid-surface countertop.

WEIGHT

Corian countertops are roughly about a half-inch thick which gives them a weight of 4.4pounds square foot. A 20-foot countertop weighs 88 pounds this assures that the cabinets underneath can support this weight.

SUPERYACHT BEST MATERIAL

In the past yachts have evolved from wood to composite and naval designers have added steel, various plastics, aluminium and Ferro-cement to the building list materials. Nowadays, yachts employ several materials and the possibilities are endless. Adequate material section when a building either a single or series of construction is important to success.

WOOD

Wood can be used as plywood or solid planks, yachts nowadays are cold-moulded using wood strips and resins. Wood provides aesthetic, thermal and acoustic benefits than metals and other materials. Saturating wood in resins lower the maintenance problems.

STEEL

Streel has strength even in light gauges and can be repaired at most rudimental facilities. It is favourable to both hot and cold climates making it to be shaped into compound curves and complicated shapes. Being vulnerable to rust is a clear or common disadvantage. This disadvantage can be lowered by being attentive to construction details, design and good application of modern coatings.

ALUMINIUM

Aluminium is more costly to than steel and it is very light for its strength. Good selection of marine alloys is crucial as some other grades will not work well in a salty environment. Application of fairing compound is usually required for yacht grade finishes and the material is affected by corrosion if no proper precautions are considered.

FIBREGLASS

Fibreglass is the most known material and mostly used for the production of yachts for the capability to reuse a female mould as the foundation for the shape of the yacht. The resulting structure is firm in tension and needs to be laid up with many heavy layers of resin-saturated fibreglass or being reinforced with wood to provide stiffness. Glass reinforced plastic is highly free of corrosion though not mostly fireproof.

COMPOSITE MATERIALS

Composite materials type include sheathed-strip, which uses a single layer of strips placed parallel to the sheer line. The materials are then applied to mould in the form of thermosetting plastic and fibre cloth. Composite materials are better suited for the production of new construction yachts rather than custom ones. Composites have some advantages which include reinforcement choices to have strength weight, the capability to mix and match a plethora of resin and dimensional requirements. They have no corrosion concerns but there are special concerns on electrically conductive carbon graphite reinforcements that should be considered and not ignored.

MARBLE COUNTERTOPS
