The novel Corona Virus is the fatal plague of the centuryHaving affected close to a million lives., the virus is still spreading wildly and not sparing any age, gender, or race. The epidemic has spread by social and environmental changes in this tremendous geological period. The world today, through technology, has been reduced to a global village and other influences. Although this is one of the most successful evolution that comes with modernization, modernization has its adverse effects too, and that is the issue of climate change and landcover. Biodiversity is also a significant change in the Anthropocene.
Biodiversity, to some extent, has greatly facilitated the epidemic. The interaction of human beings and animals has exposed them to the possible risk of pathogen transmission and makes them hosts. When this occurs, it is effortless for it to transmit from one person to the other. This interaction worsens when the pathogen carriers are not aware of what their bodies with, and they end up harming their loved ones. Biodiverse countries are also the cause of the rapid spread of the disease. People from different cultures interact in the same place, and at the end of the day, especially during the pandemic, most people went back home without realizing they were infected. Biodiversity resulted in the rise of infected cases massively. Land use has also been acknowledged by the united nations to contribute to the spread of the disease. Animal habitats today are being destroyed to pave the way for buildings leaving animals homeless. This destruction increases the percentage of human-animal contact hence higher chances of pathogen infection from the animal to human beings. Environmental changes caused by human beings change the animal population structure hence reducing biodiversity in the area. Through this, new environmental conditions begin to form on the earth’s surface which favors the living conditions of pathogens like the Coronavirus
Climate change is one of the environmental changes where the world right now is experiencing the greenhouse effect due to increased heating of the earth’s surface and unpredicted weather patterns. The coronavirus epidemic has dramatically spread since it survives in temperate countries more than in tropical areas. In the most affected countries, the weather is cold. Examples are the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy. In Africa, South Africa is also going through this because it experiences the four weather seasons. The main point is that the colder the weather, the more corona infections are likely to spread. Recent research acknowledges that the pandemic binds us globally. The effects of climate change in some areas like Haiti did not prepare them to face the coronavirus pandemic resulting in more fatal cases. All these, in one way or another, have contributed to the novel virus spread in the six continents affected. Providing solutions to the problem is somewhat confusing at the moment since biodiversity is a positive thing in general. Climate change, on the other hand, needs to be severely dealt with to avoid worse scenarios in the future.
