Corporal Punishment
Introduction
Corporal punishment is a type of physical punishment that inflicts pain to an individual when it is undertaken. It is always applied to minor groups especially in schools and home settings, and as times goes by, the physical punishment is considered inhuman hence it has led to many debates in the world and it has been taken into consideration in many legal systems. Corporal punishment includes beating, branding, blinding as well as the use of pillory hence the discipline of children in various institutions. The main reason for corporal punishment is that the inflicting of pain makes the offender from repeating the mistakes in the future period. Hence Corporal punishment must thus be implemented in homes and schools to give direction to children in an acceptable way of behaving.
Corporal punishment is very significant in the modern world due to the implication it has on the individual being a punishment. The reasons include: acts as a tool for disciplining children; it creates a shock factor for children as well it is an easy and quick form of punishment.
Punishment acts as a tool for disciplining children with unwanted behavior.
It has been evident that the whipping of children has enabled people to be a civilized generation with discipline and good morals in society. For example, corporal punishment was applied in America to students who seemed to be disobedient as they did not adhere to the stipulated school rules and regulations. As a result, the students became academically intelligent as well as competent as they performed well.
The use of physical punishment tends to instill a high level of respect for children who usually struggle with relevant authorities. It thus establishes a boundary that is required in making personal choices in the right direction. As well through corporal punishment, rules do exist that must be adhered to by any child since they know that they will be under discipline if they do not comply. Corporal punishment, when compared to other choices like suspension and detention, tend to be mostly chosen by many students. Through the sentence, the students still attend their classes and activities that they could have missed if they were on suspension.
Easy and quick form of punishment
Physical punishment is beneficial to administer, as it does not require many rules to follow. After the sentence is made primarily in schools, students turn to their usual way of operation like attending classes as compared to suspension at it will require one to go home and waste a lot of time that could be fruitful (Angel, 2018 pg. 1125). Teachers have historically applied corporal punishment, and hence a tradition that works and most effective. No, another perfect discipline can impact and deter the misbehavior of an individual. As well it is useful as more time is not wasted by the respective teachers in the supervision of students who misbehaved after returning to school. Hence Corporal punishment is very significant as it acts as a tool for moderation, especially in circumstances whereby some children need to be pushed to respond to the required rules.
Creates a shock factor for children
Corporal punishment always creates a shock element to children as sometimes they do not realize the dangers that are associated with specific situations. Sometimes children display unacceptable behavior, and they may not care about their decision. Still, due to the law of corporal punishment, they are always in shock that they may be severely punished. Hence they remember the wrong decisions and choices they make that can harm their life. Sometimes spanking may not deter short term characters but do create a message that is clear to children on their actions; hence they can guard their boundaries.
Although the argument for support of corporal punishment is widespread in the world, it is evident that corporal punishment can have long term effects on the children hence the ineffective mode of punishment. For example, corporal punishment increases child defiance and problem behavior as children may engage in stealing items in the future due to aggressive action that arises as a result of the punishment. Children are out of control, and various guardians have a belief that when they inflict pain on the children, they will behave in the right way hence disciplining children (Isaacs, 2019 pg. 491). But it’s not the case as many children are rebellious and very aggressive when, for instance, they become adolescents. Children undergo emotional torture as a result of corporal punishment, not only pain.
As well, the punishment is considered violence against children as parents use physical force to inflict pain. It’s a form of punishment that is deemed to be abusive, and it has a long term effect in that by using corporal punishment, especially in children, a long term impact arises regarding the mental and physical state. Frequent application of the sentence increases the chances of abuse of drugs, leads to depression cases, anxiety as well many children do develop stress. The punishment contributes to low self-esteem as the students do develop low concentration as they are always afraid to come up with new ideas hence leads to poor performance. Children become angry toward their parents and only obey out of fear that they could be punished.
Conclusion
Corporal punishment in various schools has been an issue of debate in many countries as it entails arguments for and against the sentence as it revolves around moral ethics as well as maintaining an individual discipline by use of force. For corporal punishment to be efficient, it must be adequately implemented, especially in the school setting hence an effective method of ensuring that the students do follow the rules and regulations that are stipulated as well as enhance overall performance. Corporal penalty is significant due to the following: it is a disciplinary tool as it instills respect for kids, creates a shock factor to unruly children as well it is a tool for moderation. However, the punishment has long term and short term implications for the children, especially concerning their mental and physical state. The punishment acts as a potent tool, and sometimes it dramatically lowers the self-esteem of children as they fear and not ready to come up with new ideas. Hence the poor performance is realized, and it’s not an effective way of punishment. Rules and regulations have been set up in many countries that deter corporal punishment in schools, but teachers use other forms of punishment, but they seem to be ineffective. Hence strongly agree that corporal discipline must be enforced primarily in school set up to control the students.
