Cotton Revolution and Manifest Destiny
The cotton revolution occurred in the decades leading to the Civil War and it played a significant role in the American society that is still relevant in contemporary society. Between the 1830s to 1861 at the beginning of the Civil war, cotton contributed to the American global economy through the expansion of its wealth and population (Locke and Wright, 2019). Additionally, the production of cotton connected Europe and Asia continents to America through enhancing the communication system and trade among the continents. Being produced in the southern state, it enhanced the introduction of new technologies and routes for trades. Due to these, the south state tried to assimilate its traditional cultures into the modern world such as agricultural production and slavery.
During the cotton revolution time, many traders from various cities such as Canada, Mexico, and Europe clustered into the southern cities to set up markets, firms, warehouses, and ports. Consequently, the cities in the south grew and multiplied in size contributing to a significant impact in globalization (Locke and Wright, 2019). Hence, due to this globalization, the population-based in the cities in the South state greatly gains some benefits. Some of them include; education, wealth, and multiculturalism. Both classes of people that is, lower, middle, and high updated to a high standard regarding wealth. Slavery for money comes to an end as people could spend time together.
To sum up, the cotton revolution significantly contributed to a lot of impacts that are still relevant in American society. For instance, it contributed to the end of slavery as it was produced by black people. Also, it contributed to establishing the United States economy since it was one of the profitable products produced at that time. Lastly, it led to globalization and the interconnection of many countries through the economy of the cotton plantation.
Manifest Destiny was a belief held in the 19th century in the United States. The destiny of American settlers was to move across the continents through expansion and spread their traditional norms while at the same time enlighten the primitive nations (Locke and Wright, 2019). The Americans believe that God had blessed their land and wanted them to work on it and help other nations. They strongly believed in the superiority of their culture and race, and hence, they believed that their role was to spread their culture and bless nations that had not been blessed by God.
American destiny was manifested in the United States’ involvement in the American-Spanish war. This led to Spain surrendering the Philippines island, Puerto Rico, and Guam to the United States (Locke and Wright, 2019). Therefore, this was a form of the United States expansion as colonies rather than states. Additionally, it was a form of expressing United States growth imperialism. The United States continued and in 1845 the word” Manifest Destiny” appeared in a new article in Texas. Therefore, the settlers believed that it was God’s mission for the United States to expand to the west and enlighten primitive people. The phrase “Manifest Destiny” led to a debate over slavery on whether it should continue or not. Therefore, this conflict resulted in the Civil War for the new sates to admitted into the union.
Therefore, from this concept, it is evident that the ideology of American destiny has molded the American’s standpoints and the position they hold in this world. The philosophy has influence American development in many aspects such as; war, expansion, and economy. However, critics state that they were not destined to grow and expand, but it is because of them believes that they were able to complete their plans. Throughout the history of the United State, the ideology has exceptionally manifested and continues to influence American society today.
