COVID-19 pandemic has revolutionized how education is appreciated regardless of the age of the student. Shifting from a practical physical piano class to an online class is exciting but also challenging. It becomes more challenging, especially when teaching elementary students online. Elementary students’ ages range from even as low as four years to 11 or 12 years. Therefore, teaching such children on an online platform during these challenging times of COVID-19 proves to be stimulating. However, the involvement of parents in teaching is essential in helping the children gain much out of the learning.

Parental involvement is quite dependable to help in keeping the children focused and offering any necessary help needed. Parents are the most significant help in teaching elementary students online because they can help in completing specific activities that could not be directed online. For example, parents may help in adjusting the hand position of the students. Therefore, a parent’s involvement is crucial.

When using the asynchronous technique, the teacher needs to offer a shorter lesson that will accommodate the student’s concentration span. Most children have sharper concentration spans; thus, lesson length should be adjusted to be more productive and fosters connection. On the other side, asynchronous teaching is time-shifted. It entails recording videos and sending them to children and vice versa. It is crucial to break down steps in small pieces and demonstrate as students respond when teaching new parts. It is also essential to use precise and concise language during online instructional teaching.

The webinar, “Teaching elementary students online,” has great ideas that are quite applicable and, if implemented, should be very useful. For example, I will apply the use of precise language in providing instructions and explaining my self during group teaching. It is also to let the students interact during the online lesson, a strategy that helps them feel as if they are in a physical class. Will also keep the elements of routine at the start and the end of the online teaching.
