Curatorial Proposal
Introduction
Museums are ideal places for coming across different collections of visual art. In my digital visit to the museum, I came across The Metropolitan Museum of Art, located in New York. The art collections at the Metropolitan Museum were very many displaying different paintings that were done in different periods dating from as long as 1400AD. The curator essay gave a glimpse of the permanent collections and the special exhibitions of the visual art at the museum. However, from these unique arts, I was influenced to come up with this project to display various curatorial concept as well as making the idea into practice by coming up with a project of the same.

Curatorial Job Description for the Applicants
A curator is responsible for managing, assembling, and cataloging artistic galleries in museums and other art collection centers. They present and display the collections in their artistic nature. They also develop objects to display and interpret through exhibitions, publications, and presentations. The collections are in different forms from audio, video, and print; the curator ensures that arts are up to date and safely taken care of to avoid damage and alteration. A curator organizes exhibitions, buys exhibits, and participates in the restoration of artifacts of importance to the Loyola University. In the curatorial managerial position, there is attending board meetings and supervising junior staff within the university museum. It also involves going for seminars and other exhibitions of interest to the university. Its planning and budgeting of the museum’s resources to distribute to relevant departments. Allocation of tasks to junior staff and communicating directly to the university vice president are some of the responsibilities.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Maintaining museums records and cataloging galleries to easy access and retrieval.
- Develop new collections to improve and expand the museum for research and educational purposes.
- Explore the arts industry, acquiring and negotiating on new art collections such as paintings and sculptures for value addition in the museum.

- Consulting and collaborating with other museums and relevant bodies such as the National Museum Council to update with the current trends.

- Participate in job selection of hiring human resource temporary or permanent to the museum.
- Train junior staff through seminars and in-house; facilitate necessary training materials.
- Do the managerial role of directing, planning, and controlling the museum’s resources.
- Mobilize and seek external funding opportunities, such as grants from government organizations.
Knowledge
Education and Training- Have a relevant Master of Arts degree with a specialization in anthropology, sociology, or history. A Ph.D. holder has an added advantage. A professional training certificate in curating or its equivalent is desired. Five years’ experience in the same or a similar field is required. Able to put into practice skills acquired in class.
Management- directing, staffing, and coordinating people in an organization is essential. Planning and implementation of projects related to the field I desired.
Human resource- has training and know-how to manage people with tasks such as recruiting, selection, and hiring of the museum staff.
Skills
- Communication- articulate issues verbally and convey them to relevant stakeholders and external partners.
- Organization skills- plan and put things for easy access; schedule tasks to particular staff to enhance accountability.
- Negotiation- convinces customers and sellers of artifacts to sell at fair prices. Convince the university management why they should accept to fund an expanded budget.
- Problem-solving- segment issues into smaller tasks and solve them amicably using creativity and innovation skills.

Observation method
An analyst or information collector keenly watches the activities of the employees in the organization. The method is highly reliable as there is visual capturing of the information and activities. The analyst gets first -hand information without any risk of omission or tamper. The job description of a curator aligns with the observation method. Most of the jobs done by a curator are hands-on and are observed. The clarity of an art collection is judged through observation. Museum arts mostly display images, and clients appreciate the perfect finishing it comes with it. A curator is to preserve its nature and add more collections.
Justification of Job Analysis Methods
The method consumes less time and can be done on the job without stopping the person at work. With all the advantages, the method is subjective since observation bases on one’s judgment. To overcome the limitation, training of job analysts to focus on specific issues during the task is important. The interview method complements the observation method as it involves face-to-face interaction with the employee. It reduces assumptions created in the observation method as the employee has an opportunity to give an explanation. The job analyst gets detailed information, and a guideline is used to source accurate data from the employee. It has its downfalls as time consuming and risk of information distortion. Both methods are used to achieve excellent results as they complement each other.
Selection tool and Justification
The employment interview is the best selection tool for a curator. It gives an opportunity for the interviewers to explain themselves and deducing the right candidate. They are probed more deeply to ascertain his/her qualifications and experience. For a successful employment interview, the interviewer should have structured interview questions guide to increase reliability, job descriptions, and undergo training on carrying out interviews.
Conclusion
The above paper has connected the exhibitions from the two named artist and their work to a common theme, minimalism, clarity, and space. This process is challenging as one must find the connection between their personal lives and as to why they chose to create their arts in the styles portrayed. The roles and work of a curator also became more vivid as I organized the following slides above. Their work as a manager to oversee and manage cultural heritage, customs, or art in the various institution they were assigned to was encouraging. This assignment also furnished my documentation skills as I understood that both creation of documents and the techniques used in management. Through the study of some of their artworks, the material, intermedial, and affective dimension of documentation was incorporated as important skills used in management. At first, the process didn’t come naturally; I struggle quite a bit to correlate their works with their message and theme. However, after reading various articles and viewing some of their works, it hence became easier and natural.
