For this assignment you will be composing a letter to a local legislator in either the House of Representatives or the Senate. This assignment will help you better understand public policy as well as gain valuable experience and confidence in advocating for issues relevant to nursing.
For this assignment you will need to:
- Identify a current bill that relates to either the field of nursing, healthcare, or one of the social determinants of health.
- Write a letter to the appropriate legislator based on where you live and where the bill is in the process of becoming a law (e.g. If the House proposed and approved the bill and now it is awaiting Senate approval then your local Senator would be the preferred contact).

- Identify your position (in support or against current bill)
- Provide support for your argument including reputable primary or secondary data sources. In-text citations are not required.
- Explain how legislation would affect your profession, your colleagues, your institution, or the community in which you live or work.
- Write the letter in 1-2 pages only, in 11 or 12 font, and in a block letter format.

- Include a separate one page reference page to accompany your letter.
