Professionalism is the way people behave and their attitude while in the work environment Values are beliefs that guide an individual’s behavior and are used in decision making. Professional values are the actions that are viewed as the standard by an expert and can be used to analyze behavior (Schmidt, 2018). Nursing comprises of ethical values, and the performance of a professional is evaluated based on them. Altruism, autonomy, integrity, and human dignity are core values that the global nursing community shares. Hence, the professional benefits are essential in the nursing world for they assist in behavior.
Social justice promotes equal access to services, fair treatment and dignity, and respect. In many nations, social justice is visualized through the distribution of resources, and every person has access to economic and social practices. Integrity comprises acceptable behavior, and it is a popular value with the nursing professionals (Schmidt, 2018). Nursing is a profession that requires practical standards and relies on public trust. Human dignity is an essential ethical value, especially in the nursing profession. Dignity is the act of consideration of other people’s beliefs and the preservation of a patient (Schmidt, 2018). The value is embraced in various cultures across the world since the nursing profession believes that every single person has the right to access dignity and respect. Altruism promotes the ideology that nurses should have the ability to focus on patients as human beings and possess the spirit of selflessness and helping others (Schmidt, 2018). Autonomy is an ethical value that seeks to give the patients the necessary information and their families. The patients have the freedom and right to choose treatment and prevention through the nurses’ knowledge.

Autonomy is a value that is eye-opening to many nurses as there are cultures that forbid the telling of harsh truths. Dilemmas in the nursing profession are more comfortable to solve with the integration of autonomy as discussions with the family and patient are not challenging (Schmidt, 2018). It is easier to talk about terminal illness with a patient and their family. Human dignity eradicates the assumptions and judgments and promotes the treatment of not only a patient but generally any person as an individual. Nursing is a profession that values integrity; hence it is essential to do the right thing. Nursing portrays integrity through providing quality service to the patients, which will lead to respect by colleagues and recognition. Social justice enables a nurse to exercise fairness and equality in serving patients. Altruism is a core value that shows how much a nurse feels accomplished when making a difference in the lives of a patient.
