White – collar crime can be described as non-violent acts committed by those in the upper class. These individuals are well respected and well known businessmen, and they are likely to hold positions as business managers or executives. One example of white-collar crime would be embezzlement. Embezzlement is when someone withholds money for the purpose one thing and uses it to put into their own account. This is commonly committed by those in management positions who have access to these funds and are able to move the funds as they please. Another example of white-collar crime is corporate fraud. Corporate fraud is an illegal act made by an individual or company that can tick individuals into spending or investing money. The money that is collected in put into an account, but the service is never completed.

Describe and define two different types of white-collar offenses giving examples of each.

After reading our material, a white-collar crime is a crime that is committed without others being privy to what is going on. These crimes often involve office type personnel in management positions, termed a “white-collar” worker. The name white collar came about because often white people who were in charge were in a higher position than other nationalities, for instance, slavery that occurred in the United States back in the 1860’s and earlier. White people owned plantations that relied upon African slaves who were owned by the white plantation owners. The slaves were expected to work and toil for hours every day in all the fields of corn, rice, tobacco, etc. in order for the plantation owner to be successful and make a lot of money. This was not considered a crime back then because slavery was widely accepted, but now, this would be a white-collar crime with great consequences. Back then the consequences did not exist because it was an acceptable behavior, not considered deviant as it would be today!

Another crime that occurs, of course there are other numerous ones, is embezzlement. This type of crime involves people on the lower level, such as bank tellers. I say lower level because they are making minimum wage and trying to make ends meet. This embezzlement (deviant) behavior occurs quite often although it does not seem to be acknowledged unless it is discovered. Another type would be a sales representative charging extra for things that were not actually purchased. This actually occurred in my workplace, costing several thousands of dollars to consumers and the hospital.

White collar crimes often go unnoticed and once they are discovered seem to have a varied  amount of punishment. I think the laws needs to be better defined as to what the punishments should be.
