Describe the crime problem
During The covid-19 epidemic, most people faced retrenchment and no means of sourcing their daily livelihoods; despite the epidemic and the serious consequences of exposure, people still hard to somehow source for a means to survive. Desolate houses became easy targets for buglers and thieves who were forced into crime out of difficult circumstances.
Describe a formal strategy to resolve this problem and explain why it would not be effective based on the sociological and criminological concepts learned in this module.
A formal social control strategy would be a fine with a threat of incarceration, accompanied by some form of community work. Criminals who are as a result of a pandemic cannot be considered a threat to society. Due to falling on hard times and a lack of income generation, someone might become frustrated, and due to poor judgment and desperation, they opt for destructive methods. Incarceration might make such a person a hardcore criminal due to the influence behind bars. Due to the covid-19 pandemic, prisoners with petty offenses are not privy to jail-terms due to social distancing and the overcrowding experienced in jails, increasing the risk of contracting and spreading the disease.

An informal social control strategy can be forming community initiatives that identify a struggling family. These families are given food from the national kitty mitigating effects of covid-19. But since sometimes this does no get to everyone in need, there is a program for families to help each other out. The initiative is adopting a home to help each other out. Shopping for a family, either weekly or monthly. With a collective effort and word of mouth, job opportunities were looked for or created for suiting the skill set of those without jobs.

The informal social control strategy was more effective. The prediction of crime and early mitigation helped those struggling earn honest sustenance and a means for daily livelihood. People who are used to honest daily work are prone to criminal activity when their financial power is low, and they cannot provide for themselves or those around them.
