The Radao family’s case talks about Michael, an African-American male, and he is 10 years of age. Michael is born in five children, three of them being older than him and one younger than him. Michael, together with his family, lived within a middle-class residential community. Michael was only a fourth-grade pupil in an elementary school before the assistance principal referred him to the school-based mental health provider. Due to his mental instability, he became much more defiant and reluctant to observe the school’s regulations and rules. His mental state would fluctuate as he could be a role model in a day then the other day he could defy to adhere to any rules, and he could distract the operations of the entire class.
Before Michael was referred to this school-based mental health provider, he had never been subjected to mental health services before. It took much longer for his mother to be willing and accepting to actively and support the process. Michael family was not stable as there could a lot of instabilities and chaos. He grew up not knowing his biological father, but he had a stepfather until nine years of age when his stepfather succumbed due to an opioid overdose. After his stepfather died, they started moving closer to Michael’s mother’s family for support, and it was when Michael’s biological father began to reach them out, claiming for a relationship. With the chaos that Michael’s mother had with his stepfather before he died, their mother assumed that it never reached out to their children who were not the case as they used to live in the same home and could hear the arguing and fights. Michael’s mother claimed that his son was a model for the other children. In his previous school, Michael was a leader, but he could not be a new school leader since he was emotionally outraged and dysregulated. Thus he could no longer concentrate, and he became irritated easily. After the family migrated, their mother could not find a job, and this made their house to be foreclosed, forcing this family to be living in most rural parts of that place.
Michael’s capability to attain a deep and accurate understanding of his thinking patterns and behaviours was on top. He was very bright, and he used his intelligence to fix his feelings and thoughts. The social worker built a harmonious and friendly relationship with Michael and his family to be open regarding their emotions. The social worker had to spend much time on family therapeutic sessions since there were difficulties for them to be open to the social worker. It was after a short period when Michael’s family moved away after Michael started the services. To get a job, Michael’s mother had to move them to another less chaotic state. It was there when Michael’s symptoms where much more severe and the social worker had to reestablish a therapeutic rapport. After Michael’s return, his mother failed to cooperate in acknowledging any concerns that they had faced, but the social worker would call time to time to engage her to discuss any home concerns and Michael’s progress.
The social worker has shown various social work roles in the text. For instance, the social worker makes a rapport with the family so that the family can talk about their emotions and processing events despite Michael’s mother failing to respond positively. The social worker spent much of his time having family therapy sessions to discuss inappropriate and appropriate communication methods. When Michael returns to the services, his condition seems severe. The social worker had to reestablish a therapeutic rapport, and his follow-through and consistency were much important for the process. The social worker is much concerned with Michael’s family as he calls his mother frequently for their mom whereabouts and Michael’s progress. The social worker involves Michael in his treatment practically by showing how trauma could affect his brain using a diagram.
Other community professionals could help Rodao family in the social workers decide to terminate their services.
