Respond to student 1 (Torey)

Moral panic is a widespread fear that there is a threat to peoples safety. In the 1800s, opiums and heroin was on the rise. Opiums were easy to get through a prescription, they were used to treat pain. It was used often during the Civil War when treated soldiers. The problem though, is that it became a different option for drinking. People became addicted to and then felt like they needed it. Heroin became the big drug of choice in the 1890s. It was used on a scale from analgesic to a cure for certain addictions. I found this crazy, because people get addicted to heroin too. So was it really a cure for addiction or getting them addicted to something different?

Respond to student 2 (Emily)

Moral panic is defined as the process of arousing social concern over an issue, usually work of moral entrepreneurs and the mass media. Moral panic is based on kernels of truth and usually followed by repressive drug laws. One example of drugs hat have touched moral panic was the use of LSD in the 1960’s. LSD was widely popular and even to this day people know the 60’s as a popular time for the use of LSD.
