How would you describe the complexity the CEOs in the study identify as their most significant problem?
The complexity the CEOs identify as their most significant problem is the massive economic shifts, changes in the global economic power centers, new government regulations, the growing volumes of data, accelerated transformation in industries, as well as the rapidly growing consumer preferences. Besides, results from the interviewed CEOs indicate that technology and the interconnection of the world’s infrastructures are also contributing to the complexity they experience. More so, vast complexity is further intensified by regional variations. The case highlight that perspectives varied with geography led to different opinions concerning the changes to make, the skills needed, as well as the way to succeed in the new economic environment. Thus, the regional variations also compound the complexities with which CEOs must contend.
The memo was written in 2010, what do you believe that CEOs would identify as their most significant problem today and why? How do the complexities affect HRM?
If this memo was written today, I believe their most significant problem would be creating the right pace of change because as one is appointed to be CEO, he seems to have a long list of things to do. Ideally, it would be of benefit if this person learns all about the organization, analyze its flaws, and come up with mental notice regarding what he would do differently if given a chance. However, the current economic shifts and other variations do not offer that chance; meaning that CEOs are expected to attack issues and plant a flag early in their tenure. But it is always significant to consider the priorities and timing before acting because the business might not be ready for the change the CEO may want to drive. On the other hand, the complexities affect human resource management in a way that the CEO may start to make rapid decisions which would fail the organization. It also affects positively as the leaders begin to learn how to respond swiftly with the new ideas to address the profound changes affecting their organizations.
