Discussion: Healthcare Strategic Management
In this course, I will gain knowledge and understanding of the essence of strategic management. Healthcare policies are created in response to health problems that affect a larger population. These healthcare policies impact the rules and regulations, executive as well as legislative action, applying to healthcare providers and consumers (Buchbinder, Shanks & Kite, 2019). These policies have an impact on an organization’s culture because the policies help to define the critical set of principles that everyone in the organization follows. The organization’s culture is then impacted by what the leadership team, administrative, and clinicians do each day to align their daily work with those principles. One example of healthcare policies that affect the healthcare environment is the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) mandate, which required electronic records for all practitioners. This mandate was enacted to promote patient safety, create access to medical data, identify potential safety issues, and reduce medical errors. In response to this mandate, the leadership team within a healthcare organization needed to utilize strategic thinking to implement an internal infrastructure that now supported EMRs in their facilities.
These changes would impact the organization’s mission and vision by now incorporating the EMR integration into everything the providers and staff do to provide value-based quality care through the use of an electronic medical record. This would require the organization to have a logical plan of purchasing the necessary computer equipment, purchasing an EMR product, training their staff and providers, and creating workflows to facilitate an EMR into their emergency rooms, ambulatory offices, and inpatient units.

Hi Teneisha Copeland, Strategic management requires an organization to see the bigger picture and to adopt what it currently is and to envision what can be. The overall success of a healthcare leadership team promotes accountability, quality, and evidence-based medicine. This responds to the ever-changing internal and external forces that affect the healthcare system.
Hi Sandra Schultz, health policies impact the culture and procedure of a healthcare organization. It is then the healthcare organization’s responsibility to create and implement internal policies. They help to guide the structure of care, enhance the quality, and help contain the costs in providing that level of attention to their patients.
