Distance Learning: Re-establishing educational opportunities.
Distance learning has expanded rapidly in recent years. Due to the ongoing global pandemic, physical classes have come to a halt, with most institutions, including SOJC embracing online courses. Through the incorporation of technological resources such as Zoom and Adobe Creative Suite, SOJC has made online learning more accessible and more effective for its students.
Although distance learning has enabled the university to help their students earn their degrees, it is not without challenges some of which include;
Lack of support- since the instructor is physically unavailable, the student might not receive the needed guidance to navigate through a topic or course.
Technology- online learning depends on the use of technology, and even though a majority of students have access to computers and the internet, it would be wrong to assume this is the case for everyone.
Isolation- The university encourages peer-based learning through group work, discussions, amongst others. However, distance learning does not award the opportunity of a learner to enjoy a classroom environment leading to feelings of isolation.
As discussed, there are several challenges associated with distance learning, and according to a study by Brookings, it usually results in higher drop out rates. It, however, does not necessitate the disbandment of online classes as they provide an opportunity for students without access to physical classrooms. With the right strategies, distance learning has the potential to be as effective as classroom learning. Some of which include;
Setting up a study space- It is tempting to study anywhere, including in front of the tv, it is therefore crucial for a student to have a designated study area preferably away from distractions.
Practicing time management- Since distance learning has flexible schedules, students should keep a program to avoid losing track of school work. Have a schedule outlining assignment due dates, scheduled exam dates, webinar lectures, and any other activities.
Consulting with your tutor- There is no shame in asking for help with a concept you do not understand.
With online classes becoming the new norm, the question is, will you be able to make it work for you?
