Diversity in today’s classroom
Diversity in today’s classroom is conceptualizing that every student brings different experiences, understanding, and ideas in a classroom. The three sources of diversity include religious belief, race, and socio-cultural status. All students must get an education by respecting their religious beliefs without discriminating against them. Teachers and students must respect each other’s religion. Education is becoming global, which brings today different races where each has different opinions about each other. Accommodation one another and embracing the culture and different racial groups in the classroom is vital. Diversity should bring harmony and unity in the school where diverse race, religion, and culture is respected. Students can help one another in class, for instance, during discussions and presentations. They should practice fairness and restraint by adjusting to accommodate the diverse religious, racial, and socio-cultural of all students and teachers.
Several strategies can be applied to encourage diversity among groups in a classroom environment. The first strategy to be used is the creation of an inclusive classroom that accommodates everyone irrespective of their diversities. Accommodating every student will encourage a free and friendly interaction among students and teachers. Secondly, recognition and incorporation of diverse perspectives, opinions, beliefs, and values will promote respect for diversity. Also, promoting dialogue on how to deliver on the content and assessment where it challenges students to share their experiences and cultural awareness. Thirdly, foster a sense tolerance, understanding, and open-mindedness among students to understand that, in a classroom, there are differences in terms of beliefs, norms, values, and cultural differences. Being mindful of others will enhance respect and encourages students to share beneficial differences among themselves and learn from one another; for example, they can learn the different religions, cultures, and racial values and beliefs.
Teachers need to understand the student’s diversities to be effective in teaching and assessing students. Furthermore, understanding students will help address any challenge that may arise and equipping the teachers to appreciate the different weaknesses and weaknesses experienced in the classroom. Additionally, comprehending diversity plays a crucial role between the teachers and students on how relationships and harmony in class will be built. Harmony and conducive learning environment will be achieved if appreciating one’s cultural, racial, and religious beliefs will improve the relationships between teachers and students, leading to the utilization of opportunities and strengths brought by the different diversities. If students feel part of the class, then, active participation will be achieved, and students will open up on the areas they have not understood.
