How to do Laundry

Doing laundry is a part of our everyday life. Everyone wears clothes, and at one point in time, the clothes get dirty and need to be washed. Otherwise, everyone would be walking around with dirty clothes and a bad smell. However, doing laundry is not a skill everyone processes, and sometimes people make laundry mistakes that sometimes cost them their best piece of clothing. These mistakes can be avoided by doing laundry the correct way. The procedure provided in this article will not only explain the best way of doing laundry but also how to avoid mistakes and how to save time and avoid unnecessary efforts while doing laundry. The basic step to doing laundry are separating clothes, putting them inside the washer, taking them out of the washer, and placing them in the drier. To make the best use of the procedure, the instructions provided must be followed closely. Otherwise, the results won’t be as satisfying. In this article, I will be providing instructions on how to do laundry using a washer and a drier, in a step by step procedure. Safety precautions to follow while using laundry equipment and materials will also be highlighted.

Equipment and Materials.

Before starting the laundry process, one needs to have the following materials; Washer, dryer, laundry detergent (liquid or powder), fabric softener, dryer sheets, hangers, and an iron and ironing board. In order to ensure the effectiveness of equipment, keep the washers and driers well maintained through periodic checks, especially on the older equipment. One way of maintenance is through regular cleaning of the equipment and changing parts that need replacement.

Step 1: Separate the Clothes

Start by separating the clothes that need washing into different categories. The first category is separating light, or white clothes form Darker or colored clothes. Go on to further divide these categories into heavy fabrics like wool and cotton and lighter fabrics like silk and polyester. Some clothes are made of delicate fabric that requires hand washing. Separate out the delicates from the rest of the clothes before proceeding to the next step. New clothes often bleed more color and should also be put into a separate pile and will make a separate load of laundry.

Step 2: Select the Temperature of the Water

To be able to select the required temperature appropriately, check the care tags and the labels on the clothes. The labels usually list the preferred temperature for the washing and the rinsing cycle.  Make sure that the temperatures selected in the washer and dryer fall within the range of the preferred temperatures indicated.

Step 3: Select the Load Size

Decide on the size of the load, depending on the number of times you need to wash. If the washer is less than ¼ full, select small for load size. For 2/4 full, use the medium setting and use the large setting if the washer is ¾ full. Most washing machines have a dial that can be used to select between light colors and dark colors. The settings are further divided by weight from light to heavy. Use these casuals too for setting the weight of the load on the washer. Step 4: Start the Washer and Add Detergents

Start the washer by pressing the start button or pulling out the dial that indicates load types for some washers. Stop the washer when it is about a quarter full. Measure the amount of detergent that you require depending on the size of the load and the type of detergent you are using. Open the lid of the washer and add the detergent then mix the detergent with the water by allowing the washer to run for about ten seconds.

Step 5: Add Clothes to the Washer

Add the clothes into the washer slowly, doing it one time at a time to make sure the clothes do not d up tangled together. You can add fabric softener into the washer after adding the clothes, although this is optional.

Caution: Make sure not to overload the washer as placing too many clothes will reduce cleaning efficiency and may break the machine. Do not use softener of fabrics made of microfiber, towels, sportswear, and flame retardant clothing.

Step 6: Select drying temperature and drying time

Select the drying temperature de3pending on the type of fabric. Cotton should be set at high temperature while fabrics such as polyester should be set on set on medium heat. Use low heat for delicate fabric. You should also set the drying time depending on the fabric.

Step 7: Clean the Lint Trap

Make sure not to skip this step as it is very important that the lint trap for collecting the clothes that have dried be clean to prevent soiling already cleaned clothes. The lint trap is located in the dryer just inside the door.

Step 8: Add Clothes to the Dryer

Take time to separate clothes and add them to the washer piece by piece to prevent tangling of clothes while drying g up. You can also add a dryer sheet (optional) to prevent static cling and add fragrance to the clothes. The dryer sheet is not needed if a softener was used.

Step 9: Start the Dryer

Select both drying temperature and drying tie then start the dryer. The method of starting depends on the machine you are using.

Caution: Do not leave clothes unattended while drying as this poses the risk of a fire hazard for dryers that have not been properly maintained

Step 10: Remove the Clothes

Remove the clothes that have dried up and leave the damp ones to finish the drying cycle. Fold the clothes and hang those that are prone to getting wrinkles. You may also iron the clothes to take out the wrinkles (optional).
