Dracula Paper 2
Bram stokers wrote the novel Dracula in 1897 with the primary purpose of delving through the historical context to portray what the society was like in the past. Dracula is well known for its complicated themes based on good versus evil and female sexuality. For instance, during the Victorian era, it was an expectation that women should maintain a private life. Furthermore, women were expected to be good wives who were innocent, chaste, and motherly ‘’I would, if I were in your place, certainly tell Arthur. A woman ought to tell her husband everything’’. Characters of Dracula have been altered in different film and novels in different ways, which have changed the original message Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula intended to put down.
The prejudiced view of sexuality seems to progress in a different way, which finally unfolds through the various acts that Bram Stoker presents for the reader. Bram Stoker puts the idea of sexuality to be a prominent theme through utilizing a vampire as a disguise. The characters show their greatly desired and equally strongly feared fantasies. However, one might conclude that the novel explores the idea that women are more sexual than men.
In Dracula by Bram Stoker, the theme of sexuality has been revealed in a way that sexuality acts were perceived to be one of disconcerting matter. However, the female character conversion into a vampire is in a way put across as an act that perhaps attracts and sexualizes women. Dracula gave these women a chance to act in a way beyond what was expected for them and act upon their sexual desires that they have been yarning for during the Victorian era. Similarly, the idea of female sexual satisfaction is explored throughout the analysis of mina, Lucy and the three vampire’s sisters in the novel.
Vampire Dracula is ambiguously evil. For instance, the members of the crew of light and the group in the film is dedicated to destroying Dracula who is ambiguously good. Each of them is seen making some mistake since they are only human and it is quite clear that their intention is good, which may end up mixing the idea of the Dracula, which is a classic story of good versus evil. Also, as one begins to watch the film, it is easy to know which side will end up winning “the good guys,’’ which poses the question of the exact expected number of good guys who are willing to sacrifice themselves to conquer the evil Dracula.
In his novel, Bram Stoker provides a dualistic point of view of good versus evil. For instance, in the book, Stoker paints out the message of association of Christianity with good but wants ahead to portray superstitions and magic as an evil act. In the instance when Jonathan does not heed the warning upon receiving harm from townspeople with the very Christian symbols. For example, the novel says, “ … she put…your mother’s sake,’ and went out of the room…the crucifix is still around my neck” (4). The book presents crucifix as a cross depicting Jesus on it. On the flip side, black magic in the text is believed to be the cause of the problem from the start. Similarly, Stoker seems to align purity with goodness. Stoker further aligns sexualized and promiscuity female with evil. The novel further shocks in the instance when Jonathan wakes to find three vampires in his room who finally admits in his heart a wicked, burning desire that they would kiss me with those red lips. Jonathan finally realizes that there was something that was making him uneasy. However, the sexy, evil women should be at all cost be feared as per the Jonathan assessment.
Since the vampire is different in the modern world as opposed to the vampire of Dracula, the theme of good versus evil has already changed the notion of vampire lore. Furthermore, the low of the vampire is diminished when Dracula mocks Van Helsing’s crew which is seen in his saying that “Your girls that you all love are mine already, and through them, you and others shall yet be mine” (754). For instance, upon reading the novel, one end up knowing that men are intensely invested in their women sexual behavior. Men are afraid of being associated with socially scorned women. Men define themselves as being fearful for their safety. The Dracula mock shows how women ungovernable desires end up leaving men poised for a costly fall from long term build grace.
In conclusion, the novel Dracula the Bram stocker novel contains the popular ideas, thoughts, and beliefs presented in the Victorian era. The book further points out how society was viewed as per the Bram Stoker’s generation. For instance, dating ideas mainly reflect the concept of evil and sex during that era rending the provided information being vital. The information is even nowadays related to the act of sex and homosexuality which has been evolving across the globe, and one should act in caution to avoid falling in the trap of evil. I like the book since it teaches real life situation one might end up finding himself in a fix.
