DRI Determination Overview
In general terms, DRI refers to a series of set reference values that act as guidelines for controlling nutrient intake in healthy individuals. According to the video, “DRI Determination,” Dietary Reference Intake comprises of two general guidelines. The first provides the guidelines for the daily nutrient requirements needed to maintain a healthy living (Pearson, 2020). The outlined guidelines are the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR), which is an estimate of nutrient intake necessary to meet the requirements for individuals in a specific life stage. Another is the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), which is the average intake level for all healthy individuals. Finally, we have the Adequate Intake (AI), which are experimentally determined adequate nutrient estimates and the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL), which is the highest level of nutrient intake that may result in adverse health effects (Pearson, 2020). Alternatively, the other set of guidelines comprises of the nutrient intakes required to prevent the occurrence of chronic diseases. They include the Estimated Energy Requirement (EER), which predicts minimum energy intake necessary to maintain energy balance, and Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges (AMDR), the recommended macronutrient intake.
I also went through the “review it” section of the resource area and found some interesting facts relating to the relationship between food and health. This section provides access to the course material, which includes in-depth information regarding the relationship between food and health. Generally, the concept of health is considered as being too complex to define or even measure. However, with the deteriorating health witnessed in the 21st Century, the reasons for such trends can be traced down to poor food and nutrition. Despite the disparities between human beings in terms of genetics, lifestyles, and biological composition, attempts to deal with the developing health problems will require both scientific research and general development in food and nutrition. Such efforts will also include sensitizing the general population to adopt healthy eating habits and embracing positive lifestyle changes as ways of maintaining good health and preventing the development of diseases.
