Edgar Poe: Annotated Bibliography

Yin, Jiaqi. “An analysis of ‘Beauty of Death’ in Edgar Allen Poe’s Poetry. English Language, Literature & Culture, vol. 3, no. 1, 2018, pp. 20-24.

The article explores the theme of death which is very prevalent in Edgar Poe’s works. It uses not only Edgar Poe’s works but also what other scholars have stated about them. As such, the author of this article employed an exploratory design. The article is divided into several sections. The section that I will paraphrase the most is the second part which involves how the theme of the beauty of death is presented in Edgar Poe’s poetry. After completing his analysis, the researcher argued that “In Poe’s mind, death does not mean the end of life, but a kind of rebirth and a sublimation of soul, and helps people to find the “supernal beauty’ which only exist in another world” (Yin 20).  This is the article’s claim. The author of this article is affiliated to Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing, China. Besides, the article is a peer-reviewed. This article is relevant in helping one understands Poe’s unique and extraordinary view of aesthetics and death.

Tsokanos, Dimitrious. “Hellenic references in Edgar Allan Poe’s critique on contemporary society.” International Journal of English Studies, vol. 16, no. 2, 2016, pp. 45-59.

This article explores the meaning and reasons behind the presence of Hellenic references in the works of Edgar Poe, specifically those of Greece origin. The researcher explores some of the works by Poe, which include “The Colloquy of Monos and Una” “The Conversation of Airos and Charmion” and Mellonta Tauta.” I will paraphrase these sections when completing my research paper. After analyzing the selected works, Tsokanos argues that Hellenic literary sources influenced Poe’s life and works (58). The article is authored by Dimitrious Tsokanos, who is affiliated to the Universidad de Almeria and is published in a reputable peer-reviewed journal titled “International Journal of English Studies.”  One significant quote from this source says “Upon a closer examination of Poe’s works, it is rendered obvious that Poe was influenced by Hellenic literary sources-either by Hellenic tragedy, philosophy, or the Hellenic language itself” (Tsokanos 58). This article will be important when exploring how Poe’s early years influenced the various decisions he made when writing some of his works.

Jandaghi, Hatameh Sadat, and Esmaeil Zohdi. “Symbolism in Edgar Allan Poe’s selected short stories.” Theory and Practice in Language Studies, vol. 8, no. 3, 2018, pp. 314-319.

This article explored the use of specific symbols in the short stories authored by Edgar Poe’s. More specifically, Jandaghi and Zohdi wanted to investigate symbolism in some of the short stories by Poe, the author’s motives for using the literary device as well as its success. The selected stories explored in this article include “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Pit and the pendulum” and “Hope-Frog” (Jandaghi and Zohd 314). I will paraphrase the findings of the author of this article when it comes to the section on how the analyzed primary works utilize symbolism. After analyzing these works, Jandaghi and Zohd argue “Most of the symbols used in Poe’s selected works seem to be connected to the theme of death” (p. 317). This is the article’s main argument. Also, this is the quote that I will focus on in my research paper.  Hatameh Jandaghi and Esmaeil Zohdi are scholars affiliated to the Vali-e-Asr University of Rafsanjan, Iran and their article is published by a peer-reviewed journal. The article will be very relevant in connecting Poe’s works to his life.

Harits, Wakhid and Ulfar Sari. “Myths in Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Raven.’” Journal of Language and Literature, vol. 2, 2016, pp. 125-132.

The aim of this article was to explore myths in the poem “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe. The study used a qualitative study design for collecting, coding, selecting and analyzing data about Poe’s use of myths. After data analysis, the researchers found that Edgar Poe’s “The Raven” has three forms of archetype image, which are the demonic, apocalyptic, and analogical imagery (Harits and Sari 125). This is the article’s main claim. I will also paraphrase the part where the article describes how the poem “The Raven” speaks of the sorrowfulness in Poe’s works. The authors of this article are affiliated to the University of Palacky Olomouc, Czech Republic and Universitas Trunojoyo Madura, Indonesia (Harits & Sari 125). The authors of this article argue “Myths also embody the cultural and social values of the civilizations in which they are created” (Harits & Sari 126). This is the quote that I will incorporate in my research paper. This article will be relevant when exploring the outside influence in Poe’s works.
