Effective communicationEffective communication

  1. Percent of Communication

Communication is a process in which humans exchange information and influence each other. Communication is essential in everyday activity as it helps me achieve personal goals. Generally, my percentage communication throughout the day, as I observed, constitute 80% of my daily activity. This is because, in everything I do, I either communicate with myself through interpersonal communication or other people who provide information on how I will fulfill a particular purpose. I, therefore, rely on communication for most of my routine daily activities and decision-making.

2. Percent Time

Communication among humans is both social and cognitive. It can occur in various contexts, namely; interpersonal, dyadic, small group, and public. Among the four groups, the percentage of use was 40%, 30%, 20%, and 10%, respectively. Interpersonal context involves the communication is I have with myself through the use of reflective thinking and internal vocalization. The second form of communication that I use in my daily interaction is group communication since I am more of an extrovert. Dyadic communication involves dialogues with people I share interests with comes at this place. Lastly, I used public communication the least compared to the other forms of communication. This is one-way communication in which only one person is responsible for conveying information.

  1. Percent Satisfying

The goal of communication is to satisfy human needs that fall under four categories, namely; physical, practical, identity, and social. The percentage satisfaction is 50%, 30%, 15% and 5% respectively. According to the observation I made on my daily communication routine, I was able to analyze how communication helps me fulfill these needs. The physical need which involves psychological well-being was the most satisfied. In second place was the practical need that is directly linked to the purpose of communication. As far as identity is concerned, communication enabled me to gain a sense of self-awareness. The fourth most satisfied need was a social need, which enables me to gain a sense of belonging.

4. 5 Ways

I have identified five ways in which I would like to improve my communication skills. They include providing feedback, active listening, and flexibility, being visionary, and being articulate. Providing and receiving feedback is crucial for effective communication, especially with my peers, as well as my boss. I can also learn from people when I listen more, especially with business associates. Flexibility is essential in effective communication as it ensures  I embrace change. This can occur in the workplace, where changes in activities arise often. Providing a vision in communication, on the other hand, ensures that I communicate my message effectively. And lastly, being articulate will help will clarify my message to the intended audience, for instance, while doing a presentation.
