Effects of Remote Learning on Students’ Development
Remote learning has profound effects on students. The effects can be positive or negative. During this covid-19 pandemic, the education system was sterilized, which led to the closure of schools and higher learning institutions worldwide. The closure of learning facilities left learners and the management pondering on what next. The prolonged pandemic period has left learning institutions with no other choice but to transition from the old system to a new learning system. The new system that has been adopted is remote learning and is impacting greatly on remote learning.
Remote learning is highly associated with the use of technology. Technology can be viewed as a distraction, but it can be used as an effective learning tool on the better side. For instance, technology allows the learner to have ease of access to learning resources. Many learning resources from various learning institutions are readily available online, which means that a learner can acquire more knowledge. Technology improves the learner’s commitment to take, for example, when taking online discussion. Remote learning also widens the class boundaries, and this means that learners can ask questions to any lecturer apart from your tutor. In learning institutions, learners have different paces on how first they integrate information. With remote learning, students have the advantage of learning at their own pace hence more understanding.
Remote learning may also affect learners negatively. For instance, during usual class learning, learners interact directly with their supervisors; once learning has become remote, the interaction becomes remote. Remote interaction cannot be compared with direct one since, in a face to face interaction, a leaner is directed and motivated. Remote learning has psychological effects on learners, such as isolation. Isolation leads to individualism, and the less powerful in the societies are socially isolated, which on the advanced stage can lead to traumatization. Furthermore, remote learning may lead to addiction and mental disorders which result from mental overload and uncertainty.
In conclusion, remote learning will affect learners differently. Some leaners have used technology over a long period, and some are just getting introduced. The bottom line is that a leaner will gain new knowledge. The learner will also have the privilege to learn at their own pace. Self-paced learning implies that learners will understand things that they could not synthesis in class.
